david fincher's sprawling serial killer drama is so intense, dense and detailed in its obsession with procedure. that's why downey's presence here is so crucial. he significantly lightens things up and brings a much needed sense of comic relief albiet with dark humor as self destructive san francisco chronicle crime reporter paul avery, who covered the zodiac killings in the 1970s fincher is a master of creating a deeply creepy mood, but as the bearded, chain smoking hard drinking avery, downey has enough confidence and personality t oshatter it or at least make some serious dents in it again and again. gotta watch and a great movie.
The detail in the picture and sound from the DVD to the blu-ray are substantial. Of course....it is HD. There are scenes you will pick up better because of the clarity as much of the movie scenes take place at night. The sound is much more balanced as well. For example, the music playing in the intro as Graysmith is going to work is not so much louder than the dialog so you won't have to keep grabbing the remote to hear the characters speak. Well worth the upgrade to blu-ray.
David Fincher is one of those rare artists who makes great personal visions in the Hollywood system. That also means unfortunately his blu-ray releases get neglected and become out-of-print and over priced on eBay. But worth it.
Very in-depth second disk. Worth it to get it over the one disc blu-ray. The video quality is superb, as well as audio quality and everything else in the film. Definitely one of Fincher's best.
