Columns is an action puzzle game that has you manipulating groups of three connected jewels in order to create matches horizontally, diagonally, or vertically. Each match of three or more will remove the colorful gems from the playing field, as additional columns fall from the top of the screen. Create combo chains to improve your high score and advance to more challenging, faster-paced levels. In addition to the main play mode, where you attempt to clear jewels for as long as possible before the columns eventually block the top of the screen, a "Flash Columns" option is included that involves solving puzzles by removing a flashing jewel before time expires. Columns features both solo and head-to-head play against a friend via link cable. Multiple difficulty settings and starting levels are included for a custom challenge, and the Game Gear version lets you change the jewels to blocks, dice, fruit, or playing card symbols.

COLUMNS for the Sega Game Gear
Columns for the Sega Game Gear. Well, this game was a launch title for the system, meant to be competition for the Game Boys' extremely popular Tetris, which was also a launch title for it. Unfortunately anything pitted against Nintendo within the portable capacity, especially in those days, was a dismal joke in terms of sales. That being said Columns is actually a pretty solid puzzle game. Like tetris, blocks fall from the top down and like Tetris you can also choose difficulty, level start, and pick between three different music tracks. Columns goes a step further and lets you change the color/design of the peices that fall. The idea of the game is pretty simple but can get quite hard when you get to the higher levels. Three colors of a piece come down from the top and with a tap ... Columns for the Sega Game Gear. Three colors of a piece come down from the top and with a tap of the 1 or 2 button you can cycle through their position. The idea is to match up 3 or more colors in a row, horizontal, vertical, and diagonally. If you get more than 3 and those colors are touching like colors nearby, those will dissapear too. There is even a special piexe that comes down, kind of looks like a lightning bolt to me, that once put down will change for you to pick a color to wipe out every one of that color on the board. Like Tetris it gets faster and faster the higher your level is, and also like Tetris if you get to the top of the screen without anywhere for the pieces to fit falling from the top of the screen, game over. To me this game was actually an early version of Bejeweled, without all the fancy bells and whistles that became Bejeweled. It is only a couple of bucks here on eBay so if you do happen to have a Game Gear I would say it's worth a shot, it is a lot of fun. Something to do during those idle moments in life... Make sure you bring spare batteries though, becasue as you probably know, the Game Gear will drain them faster than you can say, "Seeeggaaaa!"

I bought this game because I was looking for a quick paced, critical thinking game that could rival Tetris. I found it with this game. This also was on almost every single top 20-25 list of Game Gear Games and being a recent first-time owner of a Game Gear, I was willing to get advice from just about anywhere. Columns works because it is not a knockoff and it is more thought provoking and nerve wrecking than Tetris. If you're up for a unique challenge, This is the way to go.I bought this game because I was looking for a quick paced, critical thinking game that could rival Tetris. I found it with this game.
