I really liked that this anime was more about the thoughts and feelings of the characters rather than any actual ninja fighting. I like the occasional fighting anime, but what really draws me in is the characterization. Though the ending was a little sad, I would more aptly say that it was bittersweet. While it was sad, it was also a heartwarming scene. The art of the anime is excellent as well, which is another plus on my 'what-makes-an-anime-great' list. The two main male characters forge a great bond of friendship, though some people would say it was more shounen ai/boy love than friendship. This show definitely walks a fine line between friendship and love, but you can take it whichever way you wish.
I love this series. I’ve watched it twice and own and have read the manga several times. I love the characters and character development and there are some quite deep moments - it has genuinely shaped me as a person. It might not be perfect in all ways, but it is to me.
