About this product

Product Information

In East Berlin in 1984, the secret police, known as the Stasi, are gaining more and more control, spying on German citizens, and recruiting thousands of them to spy on each other. Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe) has been ordered to find something on playwright Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch), so he sets up a surveillance room and listens closely as Dreyman, his actress girlfriend, Christa-Marie Sieland (Martina Gedeck), and various suspected radical friends gather in their apartment. But when Wiesler discovers that culture minister Bruno Hempf (Thomas Thieme) cast suspicion on Dreyman only so he can have his way with Sieland, the master interrogator and torture teacher starts taking a long look at just what it all is about. THE LIVES OF OTHERS, cowritten and directed by first-timer Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, is a tense, compelling thriller about a critical time in German history. Mühe is mesmerizing as the complicated Wiesler, a loyal soldier until he learns too much. The wildly talented Koch is outstanding as Dreyman, a man with a lot to say but desperate to avoid the same fate as his mentor, theater director Albert Jerska (Volkmar Kleinert). Inspired by actual events and real characters, THE LIVES OF OTHERS was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2007. Interestingly, during and after the filming of the movie, several of the actors (including Mühe) found out that they or their families had been victims of the Stasi--and in one case, the father of an actor (Charly Hubner) was revealed to have been a member of the Stasi himself.

Book was as described and as pictured, even more beautiful in person. Was hard to find a Ciardi translation with Dore art and an elegant exterior design. It was packaged wonderfully, well protected. Shipping was great even though it was held up in customs as I expected it would. Patience is key. Worth the price and now has a new home with Lovecraft, Chaucer, Poe, Grimm, Shakespeare and many others. Thank you so much and this book will be very much loved and handled with care.

Socialism - how it really works.

This is not only a compelling and moving film, it is a devastating condemnation of the mentality that creates a socialist state, from Hitler's National Socialism to the Soviet Socialist Republic, to Cuba, to Venezuela. Forget the toxic political theories, see what it does to people. Sorry for the political rant. The personal relationships in the film overwhelm all else. Great film.

    Don't Buy the Cheapest.

Some years ago, I bought this DVD from Amazon. It is a wonderful and worthwhile movie, and the English subtitles ( I have a slight knowledge of German) were good. I lent this movie several times, and the last time, it was never returned from I don't remember who. This time, I bought the cheapest version on eBay. It is the original movie and it is captioned, sort of. as they are not an attempt at direct translation but only infrequent hints of what is being spoken. I will keep the disc but have learned my lesson--this time cheaply. My advice is to buy one from Amazon if your German isn't so good or try one of the more expensive ones on eBay and be ready to check the subtitling and return if inadequate.

  • Haunting film

This is one of the most heart and gut wrenching films I have ever watched. Human behaviour, the good, the bad and the ugly is weaved into of E German society before and just after its demise. Amazing to see the power of psychological and emotional torture that was so effective in maintaining thie E German regime. Excellent acting, compelling script. A must-see for those interested in human behaviour and its consequences.

  • Looking at the life in East Germany.

This movie was like looking in a port hole in East Germany. The citizens were spied on, homes were bugged, you could not voice opinion or comment on the government. Life was stressful, that's why East Germany had the highest suicide rate in Europe. Amazing and realistic film.

  • The evil and perverted masters of Socialist/Communist East Germany

This is a good movie because it allows the viewer to see just how evil and perverted the masters of Socialist/Communist East Germany were. Their psychopathic intrusion into people's private lives drove many to death. The fact that many of the ex-Stasi henchmen were allowed to remain among the populace was a mistake that I saw repeated in post-Ceaușescu Romania when I visited there 14 months after their revolution. I was told by one man there that they will not make the same mistake next time. It's too bad that 27 years have passed since then and the chance to make things right has not occurred. This is a mistake that must not be repeated in this country (the USA) when the time comes.
