The fourth game in Hudson Soft's fighting franchise, Bloody Roar: Primal Fury makes its Nintendo platform debut with new play modes, six new stages, two additional characters, and enhanced visuals. Known as Zoanthropes, each combatant has the ability to transform into a beast during a bout. Among the animal alter egos are a rabbit, leopard, tiger, chameleon, bat, wolf, mole, and more. Twelve characters are initially playable, with four more waiting to be unlocked.<br><br>By inflicting damage (and to a lesser degree, receiving damage) fighters build energy in a Beast Meter, which controls the length of time they can stay in beast mode. Energy is depleted by performing special attacks or by taking damage. Once the meter is emptied, the fighter will return to his or her human state. Appearance aside, the most significant benefit of changing forms is the ability to attack with more damage and to use special combo moves. <br><br>Modes of play include Training, Arcade, Time Attack, Survival, and Team Battle, while two players can square off in either Versus or Vs. Team Battle modes. Many of the 3D stages feature destructible walls and floors, at which point the fighting will continue in an entirely new area of the stage. Hidden beasts include an elephant, phoenix, and an iron mole, which are earned by playing through the different modes.

A solid fighting game, but nothing extraordinary.
The Bloody Roar series is all about fighters with "zoanthropy", or the ability to turn into human-animal hybrids. As a fight progresses, characters will build up adrenaline based on how much damage they're doing and when their meter is full, they can transform into their hybrid form and (ideally) deal more damage than they can in their human form. This system definitely adds an interesting new dimension to the basic fighting game formula since the player often has to fight in a different style based on what form they're in. There are also plenty of characters, including some which can be unlocked by progressing through the game, and plenty of different animals to transform into (including the unlockable PENGUIN fighter... I guess they ran out of fierce ... The Bloody Roar series is all about fighters with "zoanthropy", or the ability to turn into human-animal hybrids. I guess they ran out of fierce creatures). Unfortunately, despite its promising concept, Bloody Roar 3 lacks the depth of other fighters available on the GameCube. You would think that the elephant man would move slower but do more damage and the cat girl would be quick with less powerful strikes; but generally speaking, there's not much difference between the way the characters fight. The story mode is also a little weak... you'll fight a series of battles with little explanation and little increase in difficulty, only to be rewarded with an anime cut-scene ending that's usually pretty cryptic. The music is pretty generic as well, and seems out of place in a fighting game, in my opinion. Put this game next to Soul Calibur II and Bloody Roar 3 just doesn't stack up, animals and all. That's not to say the game can't be fun, though. It is kind of a gimmick game but the gimmick they came up with is well-executed. If you enjoyed the Street Fighter series, which has many similiarities in control with the Bloody Roar series, or if you like the 3D Mortal Kombat games, which offer a similar gameplay feel, you'll probably have fun with Bloody Roar 3. Just don't expect to find a diamond in the rough in the bargain bin with it.

Only difference between these fighters and most others is that the competitors can transform into anthropromorphic creatures of all different animal species, increasing their strength and skills to help them defeat their opponents. Really love the game for the difference that it provides that not many fighting games feature. The ability to shapeshift into a creature of both half human, and half animal. The combat engine is very in depth with combos that can change depending upon the button pressed as well as the direction at times. Also changing when in their other forms as well to completely perform something different. the music of the game is decent, sometimes calm and soothing, ... The scenery is not too hard on the eyes as well. Beautiful scenes to have a nice battle. Each stage comes complete with a barrier all around the competitors of which can be broken down to help you defeat your opponent faster by a ring out. All in all the game is great and I would definately recommend this game to all gamers who are into fighters.

One of the few...
One of the most overlooked fighting games made for a platform, I find Bloody Roar: Primal Fury for the Gamecube to be a good respite from most of the button jammers out there. Of course, one CAN button jam, but there are also a good deal of hidden combos - making the game easy for both experienced and younger gamers to enjoy. Best fighter I've found for the cube.
