I love the LX5. It takes great quality photos and is very easy to use. It's a point and shoot, but the photo quality is excellent and the manual setting options are extensive. If you know what you're doing you can take nice nighttime shots. Most of the time the "intelligent auto" setting really is intelligent and takes an excellent photo on the fly without tooling around with manual changes. A lens cap is an essential add to have with this camera. Without it, the lens will get scratched up pretty quick. I have had 3 of these cameras. Partially, I can be rough on gear (they have all met sandy and/or watery deaths). And partially I feel like this camera isn't as durable, considering its heft. The lens starts to get stick as it extends/retracts with even the thought of a little dirt or sand breathing its way near the lens. And humid/rainy conditions also quickly fog up the lens. I also wish it had a panorama setting. It does have panorama assist, but who really wants to try to line up and stitch together fake panoramas? It's a great camera if you can get it used. This is an absolutely fantastic camera in all ways. Compact, lightweight, but with an embarrassingly broad range of features and capabilities. It takes excellent photos, the camera controls and software are easy to use, and the battery lasts so long it's downright supernatural. If you care about the quality of your pictures and the control you need to take them, but you want a camera you can take everywhere and not notice its weight, this is your camera. The only gripes I have are that the audio pickup for shooting movies isn't great quality, and I always forget to put the macro mode switch back to normal auto-focus. But those are minor compared to this excellent camera.
Well, I've searched tremendously a lot before purchasing a camera. I was looking for a quality camera that would take very clear pictures in house as well and even when it's a bit dark. I am NOT an experienced camera user, I am a simply man who looks for the best sharp image camera out there in all daily situation without using the features, simply using the auto version. And I can tell you that I am very pleased for the image quality and great resolution in low light in house pictures. One more thing, it takes pictures pretty quick, meaning you won't need to wait too long between each picture you'd like to shoot. That's a great plus too.
Am moving from a heavy Canon 40D to lighter weight equipment. Am doing an advanced compact and superzoom bridge. This little LX5 is a dream to use, and carry around. More than enough buttons and dials to keep me happy and picture quality is very impressive. Because of the size I'm skipping it in my jacket pocket and taking it almost everywhere I go. Now just have to hope the superzoom bridge will fill the telephoto needs as well. Waiting for it to arrive. So impressed with Panasonic the the bridge superzoom ordered is also Panasonic FZ1000.

As a ditigal photo beginner, the Panasonic LX5's artifical intelligence is smarter than I am. So, maybe, one day, I will know enough to use the manual and raw to create works of art. However, my photography is more for informational content than works of art, so manual and raw are there just so if I ever get around to it. My buying decision was to purchase a camera with a high probability of a good photos by "point and shoot" in potentially low light situations at short range. The LX5 had very good reviews with sophisticated analysis of technical data and sample photos and comparisions to other cameras. My likelihood of being able to take the photo is much higher because I will have this compact camera with me. My experience with the bulky and heavy film SLR and gear is that I was always wishing that I had the camera with me. The Panasonic OEM battery is expensive ($50) and required for full functionality.Read full review
This is a great camera. This has CCD sensor, not CMOS sensor. I like CCD sensor. Wide and bright lens. One of the greatest features is easy controlling of aspect ratio and macro beside lens. Long life of battery. I love this camera.
Recently, I was reviewing my photos from years ago and discovered that some of my best photos were taken with a Lumix LX5 that I owned in 2011. I have owned at least a half dozen digital cameras since then, all of which were more expensive than the LX5. Consequently, I purchased another LX5 on eBay. The price was under $200 for a near mint camera. The LX5 can compete with more recent cameras that cost times as much.

This is a fabulous camera and the Leica lens is tremendous. It is great in low light but you really have to learn how to use it. I've had a lot of help learning and I use Aperture to get the most out of my photos. I'm excited because this is the closest I have come to an SLR and the picture quality is amazing. So far I have found nothing I do not like, I did purchase a Panasonic camera SDHD card so that I could get the maximum best in my pictures but there is nothing not to like!
I wanted a small camera that I could shoot both JPEG and RAW on, and this camera does that. It also has a Leica lens and as much shooting flexibility as a photographer could want. I'm thrilled that these cameras are available these days at such a reasonable price. Great bargain!

Small, compact, easy to use and pictures have great colors and image quality. For an 'oldie' it is definitely a 'goodie'!
