I love this made for TV movie. I read Evan Connell's book many years ago and this was a very faithful adaptation of it. Gary Cole is amazing as George Armstrong Custer. I only had this on VHS and DVR which was gone when I changed cable companies, but now I have it on DVD. Looks and sounds great. Great price and very fast shipping.

Son of the Morning Star DVD version

Since I know the costume director, I had obtained the Republic Pictures VHS version years ago. I needed a DVD version. There are a few mosaic glitches which are really a manufacturing flaw, but they didn't really affect the story line too much. I noticed that Republic did not make the DVD like it did the VHS version, but licensed the making to a third party.

    Devil in the details

This DVD looks and plays like a copy (legal?) of a VHS recording. I have a relatively new home theater system which is still able to connect to my legacy VHS recorder/player, and my old VHS movies are playable, but naturally the original quality is not obtainable. However the Son of the Morning Star DVD quality is worse than anything in my VHS library. I suppose I should have been more wary when the product description of this DVD reads "NTSC Format". Nevertheless this TV series is hard to obtain, so I am glad I have it, but I would never bother loaning it to someone else or watching it with friends. Also your home system may or may not be able to render an aspect ratio which properly displays the TV image. My system could only get it perhaps 90% correct.

  • A great film! Close to the true facts.

This is a well made film and I believe the film is closer to the historic facts than previously made films on the life of Custer and the Battle at Little Big Horn. Custer's personality comes across well in this movie. The photography is great! The location scenes look how it must have been at Little Big Horn with its grassy plains and hills. The film has an engaging story, and I like the way the narrative of the story is told from the perspective of both the Native Indians and the Americans. I have given it 4 stars because the film itself is not in sharp focus. It could be a copy of a copy, which is unfortunate for enjoyable viewing. For this reason alone I think the price should be reduced.

  • Acceptible --- only if you wanted what appears to be nothing more than a bootleg illegal home made copy!

This DVD was advertised as "NEW FROM THE MANUFACTURER" -- but it is NOT! Throughout the entire movie there is a watermark in the upper left corner that is not quite readable but appear to be Asian lettering! The movie is doe snot have the sharpness seen with most DVDs. The cover and disc labels were printed on someone's home printer, too! If this is not available anywhere else, then you might not have any other choice -- other than VHS -- but if the FBI gets their hands on one of these "new" copies -- someone is going to go down for this!

  • Fine film marred by a poor video transfer.

SON OF THE MORNING STAR is a very fine mini-series, unusual for it’s relatively close adherence to the historical record. The script, epic production scale, Montana locations, performances, score are all remarkably high for a television program of that era. I saw it when it was broadcast and owned a VHS. I rate the DVD unacceptable. It is a very poor transfer, not even equal to the VHS or old analog television signal. I would love to fine a quality DVD or see it through a streaming platform.
