I first saw some episodes of "Afro Samurai" on the Spike TV network that was run on cable TV in the U.S. in early 2007. I decided to buy the DVD because I found the episodes on TV very entertaining & wanted to see all of them. It was a smart buy, I love the title and quote the film all the time. For fans of traditional anime series, I think they will enjoy this title very much. I has a classic samurai storyline of a child growing up to seek revenge for his slain father. The title adds modern elements to the story, such as robots, cell phones, firearms, and other high tech "gadgets". Otherwise the story is set in fuedal Japan. There are several elements of western hip-hop culture in the film, namely the title character "Afro" & his side-kick, voices done by Samuel L. Jackson. If you are new to anime you may find this film appealing as well. I would recommend it to someone who liked the "Kill Bill" series or "Sin City". I bought the "unedited" director's cut version because I hate edited movies. This is a cartoon, but it is full of adult content, parents beware. There is violence, graphic bloodshed, and nudity. The director's cut has a bonus DVD with character interviews and project development stuff. If you want to full experience get the director's cut. Best of luck in your journey for the number one headband.Read full review
I simply loved this series for many reasons. First, just the pure asthetic quality of the series makes it worth buying, for example, the scenery is drawn absolutely beautifully in every scene and episode. Secondly, for the non-stop heart-pounding, electrifying action and the ingenuity and speed and clarity and mind-boggling movements that make up the fight scenes. I've been watching anime and cartoons all my life and I can honestly say that I saw some of the best fight scenes I've ever seen in my life. Thirdly, I enjoyed how the story line was one from the old Samurai films where the plot is simple, but still has an overwhelming amount of power and meaning behind it once the Samurai's past is revealed and you see what unrelentingly drives him. Also, there are a few twists in the story that give it a supernatural vibe as well, which only makes it better. On top of the artistic quality, fighting, and story line, the series is funny as all hell! I was laughing a lot during the series because of the hilarious dialogue coming from Afro Samurai's alter-ego/henchman. Overall, this series has everything going for it including only 6 episodes, which means you can watch it in a couple days versus series that go on for years. These are the reasons why I bought Afro Samurai and would recommend it to those who do and don't enjoy cartoons, because it's more of a 3 hour work of art with everything essential to a theatrical masterpiece.Read full review
