Mary Russell and Holmes off to exotic destinations once more
A clever idea, that of basing this 11th Mary Russell novel around the G&S light opera, Pirates of Penzance, but that part didn't really come off. Nevertheless, King's writing is always (to date - I have read some 12 of her books) sharp and observant, with an attention to detail that should be a byword in the greater writing community. She has that wonderful knack of "speaking" to the reader here and there in her works without ever being intrusive. This is a quality one does not often find in modern fiction. There is no lecturing, but she will quietly recall some minor point from a few pages before, as if to say "see reader, I didn't forget about this at all," and whereas some other writers put me off completely with similar tactics used broadside fashion, with King I merely find myself ... A clever idea, that of basing this 11th Mary Russell novel around the G&S light opera, Pirates of Penzance, but that part didn't really come off. Nevertheless, King's writing is always (to date - I have read some 12 of her books) sharp and observant, with an attention to detail that should be a byword in the greater writing community. And it is not a mere attempt at cleverness which inspires this writing, but rather a mastery of subject, character and plot. This won't go down as my favourite Mary Russell novel, but as always, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. One wonders, truly, how long a given writer can keep up such a high standard.
