About this product

Product Information

Tommy Lee Jones plays Hank Deerfield, a retired military man investigating the mysterious disappearance of his soldier son, Mike, in this somber mystery-drama from director Paul Haggis (CRASH). Charlize Theron is the civilian homicide cop in the small town near the base where Mike recently returned from a term of combat in Iraq. When this unlikely pair ends up investigating the mystery together, they encounter some suspicious covering-up from the army. Deerfield gets access to his son's camera phone which contains startling video footage from combat overseas. Using a muted palette of military browns and greens, Haggis shows the same sharp eye for humanistic detail that served him so well in CRASH, infusing desolate scenes of civilian life--sterile concrete barracks, sleazy strip clubs, homey but empty diners, drugs, fast food joints, and ghostly motels--with vivid detail. Performances are all Oscar-worthy: Jones's craggy, weather-beaten face hiding grief and anguish beneath a steely facade until they threatens to boil over. His mug becomes a symbol for an America with no other choice but to confront its own grave flaws if it's ever to find any answers. Susan Sarandon bring the pain to the surface as the anguished mother waiting at home, and Theron is strong and sure, as a single mother who bravely faces, among other challenges, harassment in the workplace. Josh Brolin is her ex, the chief of police, and Jason Patric and James Franco are among the impassive faces of the military.

Very well packaged with little pieces of bubble wrap between the blu-ray discs. Had a delay issue with package arriving even though tracking said it was delivered. Not sellers fault but they messaged back quickly to my inquiry. Would do business with again.

    Little film, big delight

Despite the melancholy subject matter and grieving tone, this is a very compelling film. A mystery and a tale of parents trying to make sense of their soldier son's death. Not in battle but on the streets back in this country. Performances are top-notch. Worth checking out.

  • Sad Story

Not the pure action we were expecting from a Tommy Lee Jones movie..this instead is a sweeping drama about an ex Military man who happily sends his two sons off to war..one is killed during helicopter manevours(sp?) the other is brutally murdered by...uh uh uh you have to see this movie to find that out!! Tommy Lee Jones does an excellent job of bringing out every Dads grief when faced with losing a child..his job was doubled as he lost two! Susan Sarandon does an equally execellent job as the griving Mother..Viewers get to watch as a worried Father goes looking for his missing Son...and a scared Mother sits at home waiting..you'll be present as he discovers the ugly chilling truth..can our military service really be so cold and callous? Charlize Theron was a pleasant surprise in this ...

  • A must see!

This movie portends a fairly unsentimental examination of the way in which many of us define personal responsibility, the bargain some men forge to assume the mantle of manhood, the unanticipated consequences of the presumption of assuming we hear the people we love when they talk to us, and what exactly are the wages of the manhood, the misunderstandings, this war. There's high currency here, one in which we all must pay and one in which we will never be able to compensate for. Jones was absolutely amazing. If the film had not been one so difficult to watch, and politically polemic due to the integrity of the conclusion, he would have won an Oscar; the acting he did in this movie certainly called for one. It's one of those movies that creep up on you, and by the end, it ...

  • Thought Provoking

On the whole it is a emotional based movie about a real problem. The shear matter of fact and callous view of the soldiers is shocking at the very least. Keep in mind that this is just a movie and focuses on a dramatization of PTSS and the actors interpretation. However what is more telling is in the special features when a soldier interviewed stated how a survey to detect PTSS was given in Kuwait. The desire to go home was so great he stated that he, as I am sure countless others, answered the survey in a way to guarantee his going home. Can you blame these poor guys. My son served his tour of duty and all his pictures while there showed the stress he was enduring. The picture of him boarding the plane to leave said it all, the relief of coming home. The movie is without doubt ...

  • In the Valley of Elah (DVD, 2008)

Excellent movie starring Tommy Lee Jones as an ex-military police man who's son, newly returned from Iraq, goes missing from his base. Jones using his smarts goes looking for him. He requests assistance from the local police but is told that only the Army can help him. When the dismembered, and burned bodyparts of his son's body are discovered, it is clear that a coverup is being put together by the military. Charlize Thearon is a police officer with the local town, and after Jones convinces her that the murder happened on city property and not on Army property, the two team up and begin to solve the murder. To many, this might not be the most interesting film, but it was a deeply personal film, about a father's love for his son and his determination to see that his ...
