Players assume the role of an up and coming Dragonsage in Jaleco's dragon-breeding/combat simulation Dragonseeds. Using any PlayStation Memory Card, the game will generate a monster of your choice from data saved on that given card. The result is a dragon or monster that will need training and nurturing as your overall mission is to mold a fierce combat-ready critter! There are a few different locations in The Dragonseed City including a clone lab, nursery, Bio Bank (a storage facility for multiple dragons), the public shop, a junk shop, Pablo's, the Memory Forest, training center, Battle Arena, and your apartment (a home away from home). New players or those looking for a new critter will need to pay the clone lab a visit; it is here where your dragon is created. Lab director Tomas will give you all the necessary information on life creation including DNA structures, segments, and keyword structures. After you've finished cloning and creating your dragon, head on over to the nursery for some tender loving care. It is here where your baby dragon receives its attributes and basic training. Whichever attributes you choose (strength, wisdom) are the attributes your creature will excel in throughout the duration of its life. When the training sequence is complete, it is time to take the baby home to your apartment. While at home, players can feed or rest their dragons, provide them with new weapons and items, view your accumulated combat trophies, and save game data. Game time may also be advanced three to six hours in advance, or zipped on through to the next morning. As your critter rests, its weight and strength will increase. Once the dragon is ready to whoop some monster butt in combat arenas, its time to sign it up for the World Dragon Council's Battle Arena! The whole point of Dragonseeds is to raise your dragon so that it can reap in world fame and a slew of different awards. Your dragon can use a barrage of weapons and reflectors against his opponent in addition to moving and dodging firepower. Weapons include three types of classifications: short blade, sword, and axe. Picking the right type for your dragon is important as larger axes do more damage, but decrease overall speed. Smaller weapons won't do as much damage, but your dragon will be able to avoid contact more efficiently. Reflectors come in small, normal, or wide; they help reduce or block the effect of special attacks. Like the weapons classifications, each reflector will effect your dragon's speed -- the heavier ones slow him down, and the lighter ones keep him moving with a brisk pace. The larger the reflector, however, the more damage it will block or reflect; likewise, smaller reflectors only block a little amounts of special attack damage. Win or lose, after the fight is over, players can visit the public or junk shops and spend their hard-earned money. The public shop has a variety of weapons, reflectors, and items. Be careful though -- the store manager doesn't keep the same items on the shelf day after day. You see something you want or need, you had better buy it immediately! Additionally, the junk shop sells rare items including polish, iron and fastweed, vigor herbs, and a variety of jewels and rocks. Each item increases your dragon's effectiveness; fastweed makes it stronger while the jewels improve its special attack. This gameplay repeats until your dragon is too old to fight anymore. On this sad day, it is time to release him into the Memory Forest where it will frolic freely and enjoy the remainder of its life. If so inclined, players may catch wild dragons in the forest. Though they may be stronger than any dragon you can raise, they cannot be entered into the Battle Arena as they're not sanctioned by the World Dragon Council.

Tactical Dragon Combat
The core feedback loop in this game is raising a dragon and using it to fight in the arena to earn money until it is too old and retires. Then you raise another dragon which will be stronger with the new weapons and items you can buy it from your previous run. Rinse and repeat until you're the dragon champion or whatever and try to collect them all along the way. The mechanics of the combat are far more in depth. Each type of dragon has its own appearance and elements it can be born with. Certain elements are weak to others. You fight in an arena with 3 range bands you move between and only certain attacks will hit at certain distances. You can shoot an elemental super attack but your opponent can use their shield to reflect it back at you and vice versa. They could have more or fewer ... They could have more or fewer specials depending on their magic stat and trying to anticipate your enemies next move while positioning yourself for victory is tense and a lot of fun. This is a great game that got swept under the rug due to other major titles outshining it and an utter lack of advertisement. It's also pretty hard to come by. If you see a copy in a good condition for $35-50 you're paying in what I would consider the standard range.

I have played this game a few years ago, and was slightly disappointed by it. In the game, Time increases in three-hour segments.Going to most places on the map takes three hours, no matter what you do there.A battle at the Battle Arena takes three hours. Since each tournament is made up of three battles, you will be there for nine hours. Visiting your apartment takes up no time unless you choose to rest. The longest a dragon can live is about 30 years (each day that passes in game is considered 1 year). So you have 30 days to get your dragon to the top. If you are lucky, you will breed a super-"dragon" who will not age when it hits the adult catagory. I had gotten one and its final form looked like a anthrpomorphic, spikey dragon dude. To "breed" dragons, you fill out a phrase with key words, and those key words might give your baby a stat boost. For Example: The Egg is crying. This phrase will give your baby extra wisdom upon birth. When the baby is ready to grow into its adult form (about 7 days after birth), it cocoons itself for a day, which gives you time to go to the junkyard and buy stuff. The adult will cocoon around 20 days, and the old form will live about 5 days after emerging from its cocoon. If you decide to play this game, don't waste your time training your baby, send it into the arena fights as soon as it is born. They gain stats after every battle, so its all good. They don't need rest, even though the game says they do. Now on the fighting. you buy your dragon a weapon and shield from the store in town. Sometimes you can get a good item from the junkyard. The Ranks in the arena are E D C B & A. The battles are Rock/Paper/Scissor games: You have these battle options: Defend, Special & Attack . Special beats Attack, Attack beats Defend, Defend beats Special. I personally think the game cheats most of the time. I waited until the computer chose its move before i did. Which seemed to work. I had baby dragons in the B Rank arena fights, which was very hard to do. It was kinda funny watching my baby dragon beat up a grown dragon with more hit points then mine. Some of the "dragons" look like tombstones and half-cat/seal creatures (which are the spirit dragons), there are giant wasps with hairdryers and cannons for an abdomen. And some reminded me of pressure cookers... The only down side of the game was how long the dragons lived. Other then that, the graphics are good for the PS1, and you can have 2 player battles. You can use a pregenerated dragon from a memory card, which i don't advise because they are not as good as your trained dragon, or you can use a dragon that you raised.
