  • superb group with inventive sound

a truly great cd. this boston based band incorporates banjo , cello and double bass as lead instruments and the sound is amazing. no only do these three guys work their instruments in top notch and inventive fashion - turning old folk songs into dynamite versions - but they are also blessed with a fantastic vocalist. i think her name is o'donovan. i'll know for sure when the cd i ordered arrives. heard a cut from this album on a little folky community radio station driving through maine and was smitted. truly excellent work...should be grammy contenders.

  • CD by Shaken by a Low Sound - Crooked Still

Excellent combination of non traditional instrumentation with old timey songs and bluegrass. A driving bass, a lively cello, a complimetary banjo and an angels voice combine together to create one of the most unique sounds in acoustic music today. Traditional songs come alive with new interpetations from this dynamic band. A must for any acoustic music collection. A++++

  • Excellent vocals by Aoife O'Donovan, light easy listening.

  • Shaken by a Low Sound - Crooked Still (CD 2006)

Being a voracious music fan I am always looking for new, distinctive, music and this album certainly fills that bill. The combination of Cello and Banjo still has me tapping my foot and humming the tunes while shaking my head at how this combination could be missed by so many and played wonderfully by so few? Ms. O'Donovan's voice is sultry and fully appropriate for this kind of music and IF I had to think of someone similar I would choose Cowboy Junkies lead singer as an example. But don't make the mistake of thinking that she can't hold her own here. Mr. Eggleston's abilit to bow or flat pick a cello will remain a memorable topic of conversation with my classically trained friends for some time to come. Not to mention the alternative combination of both ...
