About this product

Product Information

This legendary dramatization of the relationship between Queen Elizabeth I of England and the Duke of Essex is a spectacle of costume and melodrama, almost as famous today for the offscreen battles as the onscreen fireworks. Bette Davis (OF HUMAN BONDAGE, ALL ABOUT EVE) shines in the role of Elizabeth, while Essex is played by the swashbuckling Errol Flynn (ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN, IN THE WAKE OF THE BOUNTY). Davis was infamously disapproving of her costar's "unprofessional" attitude, while he found her to be insufferably self-important. Nonetheless, the picture is stunning and the tale is timeless--a tragedy of epic proportions. Elizabeth is an aging queen in love with the Earl, but when he sinks the Spanish Armada and squanders ships and loot needed by England, she replaces him with his rival, Sir Walter Raleigh (Vincent Price, HOUSE OF WAX, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS). Essex is furious and retreats to his family's estate, and the Queen must coax him back to court. Their relationship is fraught by sabotage from all sides, and through the intervention of Essex's enemies the two are turned against one another. In the end the Queen is forced to choose between her country and her love for a man whose ambition could be the ruin of a nation.

BetteDavis, Errol Flynn, what a classic Hollywood duo!

I've been wanting this movie for years & I wasn't disappointed! The great Bette Davis as Elizabeth 1st, well, she nailed it! Perfectly! And as Essex, Errol Flynn! Was perfect! Then toss in Vincent Price, Donald Crisp, and others and a great iconic classic is what you have! It is in Technicolor, and is as good as any color film today. It is a full out Hollywood 1939 glitz glamour and splendor in set design and costume. All others on the subject since can't touch it! This is the classic perfection of them all!

  • Elizabeth & Essex Have a Volcanic Courtship

First of all, this is the only Bette Davis movie before 1975 that was filmed in color that I know of. She was young when it was made (1939) but she is made up to look like an older Queen Elizabeth I--completely powdered face, eyebrows plucked, and hair dyed red in little short curls. The point of all this is that she was probably miscast. The idea of the movie is that an older queen is desperate to find a suitable husband, and Essex (a very virile Errol Flynn at the top of his popularity) seems like the one--only he is so much younger and she cannot trust him. Yet sometimes she does trust him. When the movie opens, Essex has just returned from a triumphant sea battle against the Spanish at Cadiz. But instead of being proud of him and grateful, she spurns him for Sir Walter Raleigh ...

  • The Queen Reigns Supreme

Bette Davis was an excellent Queen Elizabeth I in both this and The Virgin Queen. She really took on character aspects of Henry VIII in mannerisms like the flickering fingers & the way she walked, sat, coupled with tempestuous rage(as in breaking all her mirrors) which she contrasted markedly throughout with calm adoration for her beloved Essex. When they laughed together it showed the true intimacy they shared. Errol Flynn--well, of course, he's ERROL FLYNN--he's Robin Hood! And he made a perfect Essex, though Bette wanted Laurence Olivier to play the part, and considering she wasn't real fond of Flynn, you sure couldn't tell it in the love scenes (though the feisty arguing ones showed Bette's ire toward him probably more than just acting). Filmed in 1939 in technicolor, it has some fuzzy ...

  • Greatest Historical film made from that Era

Very great histroical film, with dazzling characters and grand music. Bette Davis's performace along with Errol Flyn and Olivia De Havilland are fabulous. Thank you very much for this DVD. From Manchester, UK

  • when hollywood knew how to make true adventure films!

This film is a classic example of movie making in the heyday of Hollywood! It doesn't rely on computer generated special effects. It has real quality acting with interesting dialog. If you are an Errol Flynn fan, you must see this movie!
