It's Only Rock 'n' Roll is a one-player text and graphics simulation in which you set out to become the KING OF ROCK 'N' ROLL! After naming your band (using up to 14 letters), you begin the game with a guitar, a few bucks, a handful of band mates, and a certain degree of raw talent.
Throughout the game, you will be posed a series of questions and you will be asked to choose from a list of options. These decisions you must make involve keeping track of monthly expenses, playing concerts, planning tours, borrowing money, when to take restful vacations, writing songs, watching music trend headlines and consulting your manager for special deals. After you make your selection, the computer does most of the work, such as song writing and concert performances.
To earn money on a recording contract, you must cut a record. Highly rated records mean big record sales. Prior to this, however, you must earn 100 popularity points in order to be signed on by a record company. Successful tours and increased royalty rates will net you big bucks. Popularity points are achieved by getting fan clubs, which can also boost your level of happiness.
Your score is based on popularity, happiness and financial worth. To win the game, you need to achieve 1000 popularity points, three status symbols and $1,000,000. Win or lose, rock star or lounge lizard, you should always remember one thing: It's Only Rock 'n' Roll.
