Prince of a ballet
I’m not sure anyone reads these, but here goes. This is an overlooked gem of a piece! Benjamin Britten wrote his only ballet to a scenario that didn’t seem to please anyone when it opened in 1957. The great choreographer Kenneth MacMillan loved the music, so years later he reworked the story to be more in line with 20th Century storytelling while still being true to the fairytale nature of the piece. He succeeded beautifully, as this video can attest. Filled with delightful parts for a large cast, any fan of MacMillan’s other works should find much to enjoy. The filming is first rate. The dancing is spectacular. Find it at a reasonable price and savor it.
