    Good basic maintenance book, sparse on repair.

    This book is for non-mechanical Band Directors and those wanting learn the basics of instrument maintenance. It seems to be more in depth on woodwinds. This book is not for those wanting to do serious instrument repair. One thing I really take issue with is his recommendation of using vasoline or lanolin as tuning slide lube for brass instruments. Slide grease is cheap and infinitely better. This book would be ok for a high school student wanting to learn more about their instrument or basic info for a new Band Director. I wouldn't recommend it for someone wanting to do restoration level repair or instrument building.

    A little dated but a trove of data

    This volume is a great guide for a band director or musician who needs to keep instruments in action as much as possible without getting themselves into trouble. Has lots of data on action specifics for woodwinds instead of the generalizations in other books. Please ignore all the info on perma-pads and adjust-a-pads as these have now gone the way of the dodo.
