An excellent DVD product with easy navigation of its many chapters, well laid out. It covered a part of WWII that I had very little exposure too. It was also educational in showing, for example, how riveting was done during the war years in one of the instructional videos made for for aircraft workers. I would say that it is an unusual and uncommon view into how the enemy was presented to the American public at that time in history. As for my dislikes, I think a 3'rd disk should have been added to the collection. In conclusion, it was an Adult look at the Disney Studios and the content of what they produced. Thank you for taking the time to read my brief comments on this DVD, I hope it will be of some use to you.
This is an great example of Disney animation the way it was meant to be seen. Even with some of their animators at war, the remaining personnel at the Disney studios teamed up to make a unique collection of animated shorts in support of the war effort. Some serious, some hilarious. This DVD set is a must-have for any avid Disney animation collector. It also gives those of us who haven't lived during that time a rare glimpse into the past, and tells us of the many struggles during WW2. Older Disney fans will definitely be delighted to see their favorite wartime cartoons in all their restored glory. I bought this for myself because I always loved classic Disney, and this collection does not disappoint. An enjoyable experience for the entire family. This 2-disc DVD set comes in a metallic case with a special booklet that tells the story of the making of this set and the track listing on each disc, a small replica theatrical poster, and a numbered certificate of authenticity.Read full review
This is a great release of some very unusual films that are rarely seen. There are thirty-one short films in total, as well as a montage of training films. Some of these short films have been released elsewhere: the Oscar winning "Der Fuehrer's Face", for example, has been seen on the Chronological Donald volumes of the Disney Treasures series. But a lot of these films haven't been seen at all - indeed, some were never intended to be seen by the general public: they were made as training films for workers during WWII. It's unlikely that you'll be watching "Four Methods of Flush Riveting" on the Disney Channel any time soon... But if that doesn't enthrall you, there's plenty of shorts like "Seven Wise Dwarfs" and "Chicken Little" that surely will. Disc Two contains probably the most fascinating part of the whole set. "Victory Through Air Power" was released theatrically in July 1943, and hasn't received any sort of a release since then. It's not hard to see why, in a way: it's very much a piece of propaganda, designed to put forward the controversial theories of Alexander P. de Seversky, who wrote the book on which the film is based. This isn't the place to go into those theories, but they implicitly argue the case for a huge investment into the air force. There are also trailers, art galleries, documentaries and much more. The whole set is fascinating, beautifully put together and a great opportunity to see the output of a world-class studio we've all grown up with under military control. Highly, highly recommended!Read full review
This collection of short films is a highly valuable tool to learn not only the history of WW2 but also the mentality of americans about the war and the sacrifices that had to endure, soldierd as well as civilians. I never lived that period of history so I got a lot of knowledge watching these shorts. Just like the instructional videos shown in schools during the 50s-70s, the prescence of Mickey and his friends (especially Donald Duck who is just awesome), make this video not only highly educational but also very entertaining. This video is a treasure that people who like history of the WW2, history of animation, or Disney collectors will love.
I bought this product because I will use these when I teach about World War II in the future. The DVDs work great. I haven't watched all the content, but I have enjoyed what I did watch. I think it's a great collection that I look forward to using for years to come. I am really excited about this purchase. I did notice a small crack in disc 1, but it does not affect being able to watch the content, so I was not concerned about it. It works, and that is all I am concerned about.
