I bought this movie because I'm a huge fan of Elijah Wood, and I hadn't had the chance to see it before. When I saw it at such a low price here on Ebay, I just had to buy it. I really enjoyed watching this version of Oliver Twist, and thought it was better than the 2005 one. I have to agree with many other people about Elijah Wood's accent in this movie... really bad! But still, he shows once again how versatile he can be, a really great actor. The rest of the cast is very good to, and I was surprised when I learnt that the kid who plays Oliver hasn't done anything else since then. Anyways, I'd recommend this movie to everyone!
Present for my Great Niece, she was well pleased as she is going to be in a production of Oliver Twist.

Oliver Twist has been adapted for television so many times over the years and I have to say this is a good but not the greatest adaptation. Probably the best version is the 1968 musical version which seems to played practically every year in the run up to Christmas day. I think this Disney version despite a star studded cast didn't quite live up to my expectations. I felt the way in which Oliver was portrayed wasn't quite the way Dickens originally represented him as he seemed to be much more bold and brazen in this version and he would probably have made a better Artful Dodger as Elijah Wood doesn't seem quite the best fit for the role. He didn't have that 'street-smart' Dodger feel that so many other actors have had. It seems as though Disney have tried to smooth out all the rough edges of the plot but at the expense of many of the more classical encounters and characters that made 'Oliver Twist' what it was. It just doesn't do the story justice in my opinion even though I did repeatedly watch the DVD. Still I think other versions like the musical version do more in the way of paying the novel it's dues.Read full review
