About this product

Product Information

Deus Ex is a first-person shooter set in a dark, grim, near future. Gameplay is similar to the PC's Thief in that stealth is as important as racking up a body count. There is no multiplayer mode in the game -- just you against the computer.

Disease ravages the population while the duel for the much-in demand antidote Ambrosia rages on. Trying to keep order and make some sense of the situation is J.C. Denton, a cybernetically augmented agent of the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO) who is up against National Secessionist Forces (NSF), re-packaged Triads and the shadowy underground known as Silhouette.

The maps are large and require time to explore with the first arena the blown-up Statue of Liberty. Each set location is highly interactive with door locks to be picked, security cameras to bypass and computer terminals for hints and codes. Books and newspapers picked up during exploration provide interesting and mood inducing background as well as the occasional clue. Buildings and areas of conflict are not always linear and often offer multiple entry points.

Various personalities dot the landscape. The UNATCO soldier, the undercover contact disguised as a bum, the poor, hungry kid -- all have different degrees of interaction with Denton. Some will say just a line or two while others have entire black-market scams and try to sell you useful items. Or, some elicit cut-scenes to impart important information. The bad guys mutter and hum while on sentry duty, yell and scream, and come running and dodging when the bullet ballet starts.

When talk is useless and weapons carry the conversation, there is a mix to be had, from the ubiquitous pistol and shotguns to flamethrowers, throwing knives and mini-crossbows. Some serious military ordnance can be carried as well, such as rocket and grenade launchers, assault rifles, and several grenades (including the Electro Magnetic Pulse grenade for taking out the robotic defenses). Non-lethal means of attack are available and include tranquilizer darts for the crossbow, riot prod (similar to a taser), gas grenades, and the tried-and-true baton for whapping someone upside the head. A non-lethal approach is appreciated by UNATCO, making for some interesting decisions.

However, you can't carry everything and inventory management becomes a challenge. You'll have choices to make ranging from items such as pop (useful for a bit of health restoration and bribes) to what weapons you need. All sorts of electronics can be found in the game's environments along with several tools used to manipulate them. Lock picks and micro-tools are needed because brute strength won't always get the job done. Electro fuel cells are required to power your cybernetic abilities such as night sight and extra melee strength while new cybernetic augmentation canisters upgrade and vary your built-in abilities.

Conversations, mission goals, and logs of what you do are available with a couple of keystrokes, making bookkeeping, and note taking easier. If you do want to add your own comments, you can type them directly into the standard note section.

I borrowed this from a friend once becuase he recommended. As dated as the game is It's still fun to play, and I'm glad to own it now.

The game it self is great. A friend once lent and recommended it to me and I remember really having fun with it. The game is really dated now, but it's still fun to play and I'm glad to finally own it.

  • For an old game its pretty good

Deus Ex was considered to be one of the most advanced First Person Shooters when it came out. But now it is showing its age. The graphics are pretty bad compared to current PS2 games and the audio is not the best either. But the gameplay is still good and the way you can choose what your character will specialize in makes it a game that is still worth checking out. Deus Ex throws some RPG elements into the FPS mix and in works well. The story is not to bad either. Considering this game can be bought for under $10 you may want to try it, just keep in mind that it looks and plays like a 1st generation PS2 title.

  • Deus Ex: The Conspiracy

Deus Ex is a very popular and influential title in its own right and this game certainly does the franchise justice. A port to the PlayStation 2 from PC Deus Ex: The Conspiracy is a great port. It has minor flaws or differences such as some dialogue removal, though this is infrequent, and most maps have a different layout, but the core aspects of the game remain the same. The player can still choose how to approach a situation and the game provides unique options in a way that many games today do not. JC Denton can still go in guns blazing, creep in stealthily through vents, hack terminals, stun or completely massacre enemies, and more. This is an amazing port of a classic PC game and is well worth the money to experience everything Deus Ex: The Conspiracy has to offer.

  • Shadowrun, anyone?

I spent many hours of my life playing the Pen and Paper game of Shadowrun (Surprise! I'm a dork!) I also wasted about 30 hours a piece on the Genesis and Super Nintendo Releases of the game as well. Granted the story line is a little different, but with the similar level of futuristic technology and dark story/ setting, this is a must for any CyberPunk, Shadowrun, Fallout, or any other fan of near future fantasy. The controls take some getting used to as far as jumping and climbing. The game style is a first person shooter that acts more like a RPG. There are many ways to complete each level of the game, from being a sneaky bastard to a murderous psycho. Again, because of the controls isses when it comes to jumping and climbing ladders, I would have given this game a 4.5, but it is ...
