Vivid, heartwrmng glimpse of coyote/human 1st contact.
I have read this story (which is a journal, really) 5 times. I give friends copies of this book, because it is SO SPECIAL and insightful. It chronicles a ranchers growing awareness of & interaction with his lands resident coyote population. As story unfolds, he also becomes aware of how his dads more traditional farming methods have sometimes strained the natural ecosystem. He makes seemingly small changes. He neglects (on purpose) some of the tidying up ranch practices. The areas he leaves alone revert to more natural balance and support more wildlife. This book makes me glad. Right up there with Illumination in the Flatwoods by Joe Hutto. A classic animal behavior (and human behavior) study. Don Coyote, the main (non human) character, is smart & a true individual. It is a hardback copy. In paperbacks the print is to small for me to read so that part is great. The content of the book is unusual - the coyote is wild and the people involved are not trying to tame it, just observe its life as a wild animal. The coyote is not a hero nor a villain just a wild animal trying to live its life unmolested by humans. Unfortunately for the coyote some/many humans in that farming area blame coyotes for all their dead livestock. Because this book is an autobiography the story is true, it is also well written and very interesting.It is a hardback copy. In paperbacks the print is to small for me to read so that part is great.
