Der bedeutende Berliner Architekt Alfred Messel (1853-1909) errichtete im Herzen Darmstadts den vielgeruhmten Museumsbau des Hessischen Landesmuseums, der seit der Sanierung 20072014 wieder deutlich die Ideen seines Architekten zeigt. Die Geschichte des Gebaudes und die Grunde fur seine heutige Gestalt werden in dem Buch reich bebildert dargestellt. Das ehrwurdige Hessische Landesmuseum Darmstadt wurde in den Jahren 2007 bis 2014 einer grundlegenden Sanierung unterzogen. Das Ziel dieser Maanahme war zunachst die Instandsetzung der Bausubstanz, doch musste ebenso berucksichtigt werden, dass das Gebaude des Landesmuseums als einziger fast unverandert erhaltener Groabau des bedeutenden deutschen Architekten Alfred Messel ein wichtiges Baudenkmal darstellt. Das Gebaude dient heute noch demselben Zweck wie zur Zeit seiner Erbauung, es ist ein offentliches Museum. Fur die Sanierung war es erforderlich, die Prinzipien der Architektur Alfred Messels zu erforschen und zu analysieren. Der Direktor und beste Kenner des Landesmuseums, Dr. Theo Julich, stellt mit zahlreichen historischen Abbildungen und vielen Details die Geschichte der Entstehung des seinerzeit hoch gelobten Museumsbaus vor.
