Product Information

Owen (Danny DeVito) is a friendless would-be mystery writer who has had all he can take. He would do anything to get rid of his overbearing momma (Anne Ramsey), whose howling voice and domineering attitude have pushed him to the absolute limit. He even strikes a deal with Larry (Billy Crystal), his writing teacher, to knock off his much-hated ex-wife, with the understanding that the instructor will reciprocate. Ramsey is so terrific in her role that the audience eventually roots for her to be killed. Danny DeVito directed this very dark, very funny comedy, which owes a big debt to the Alfred Hitchcock thriller STRANGERS ON A TRAIN.

    Roll Over Hitchcock. Light-hearted Criss-Cross

    If you like Billy Crystal humor you will love this movie. Well worth watching. Without giving away the story plot, the character of Billy Crystal is a teacher-writer whose wife has plagiarized his work and it becomes a best selling novel for her. Trying to be helpful, one of his well-meaning students (Danny Devito) decides to avenge the injustice by suggesting a Hitchcock "Criss-Cross" arrangement. Of course, things get wildly out of hand, which makes for a wonderful movie. You will enjoy each character and the ending is a pleasant one. It's a great addition to your video library.

    Larry Donner, a college teacher, has been having difficulties writing since his former wife, Margaret, ruined him by stealing his novel which consequently became a best-seller. He does not hide his hatred for Margaret, upsetting his girlfriend Beth Ryan, who is an anthropologist teacher in the same college. While teaching Creative Writing classes, he is stalked by a student, Owen, who wants to know his opinion about his crime tale. Larry tells him that he did not like it, and explains that in every mystery tale, the murderer should eliminate the motive and establish an alibi, otherwise he would get caught. Furthermore, Larry suggests that Owen watch Hitchcock's movies to understand the structure of a suspenseful story. Owen, who wants to kill his detestable mother, watches "Strangers on a ...

    Still a great film all these years later. Watch it !

    While sorting thru my old vhs tapes I pulled this one out to watch it again. This is Oct. 2008 and its still a great film. A little dated, by way of typewriters, but an excellent story. Devito is great. Crystal is always himself, and the two play off each other well. If you don't know the story, its loosely based on Hitchcock's story of exchanging murders. However, this one goes all wrong, and is a hoot. Its been years, many, since I'd seen it. Its classic and well work keeping in your regular video rotation. Movie addicts manna.
