This is a decent treatment of hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. It is faithfully rendered well cast and quite a bit of fun. If you can overlook the poor production values. For some reason this work does not translate easily to the screen. I think it is largely because most of the fun is in the actual storytelling, rather than the story itself, and a great deal of that is missed despite the narration, but if you enjoy the book. This is a nice treat. It's just that this book works better as a book that it does is an actual screen entertainment. It's good but I would not be all that quick to recommend it
I had seen this video before many times, even to the point of wearing out the VHS tape I had initially bought it on as it was always in my opinion that good. There are a number of points I would like to touch on both good and bad however. First, this video is the complete collection of the 6 half-hour BBC miniseries episodes transmitted during the early 1980's based on the first 2 books(yes that's right the first 2 not just the one mentioned in the title). So, there is going to be a lot of rehash for that very reason. It doesn't however typically detract from the individual episodes all that much. Second, while this packaged TV series is more enjoyable to watch in my opinion than it's Hollywood remake starring the lovely Zooey Deschanel as Trillian, it is somewhat inaccurate in relation to the books. So, be warned if you are a devotee of the books just as I am. You will be disappointed with some of the minor elements that were left out. Third, by today's standards, the special effects are pitiful, but based on the shoestring budget I understand the series had, it's not totally unbearable --just campy. Finally, this video in addition to rehashing a bit because of the change between episodes also holds to the style of the books as Douglas Adams wrote them. As such, this story requires some viewer participation in understanding of what is happening. The story does shift between concepts without warning or apparent reason at times which can cause confusion if not outright dissatisfaction should you the viewer not be paying complete attention. Also, it should noted that like the books, Adams does not show the viewer any mercy with respect to his iconic play on words approach to comedy. So be warned. On the whole though, it is a cult classic, and by far one of my all-time favorites. Enjoy!Read full review
Love it, what more can I say. It's only 6 episodes, so I thought it a little short. But otherwise great! .... this DVD has the 2nd disk of author information, filming of HGG.

I have this on VHS tape with all the PBS fundraising included. So much better in digital! A great take, creative effects that are State of the art at time it was made. It's funny, philosophical and thought provoking.

Definitely not what I was expecting but it is still entertaining. I'm not sure I identified with any of the characters but it is a comedy & was funny. I am glad it is in my collection.
