About this product
Product Information
Smell loomed large in cultural discourse in the late nineteenth century, thanks to the midcentury fear of miasma, the drive for sanitation reform, and the rise in artificial perfumery. Meanwhile, the science of olfaction remained largely mysterious, prompting an impulse to "see smell" and inspiring some artists to picture scent in order to better ......

Reviews
"Bradstreet delivers a thoroughly-researched and richly-illustrated book, which will stand as a major reference in the field." -Clara Muller, The Senses and Society "The first study of its kind, Christina Bradstreet's Scented Visions documents in stunning detail the important role of scent in nineteenth-century art. Tracing a myriad of scent motifs that emerge across a wide array of art styles and movements, Bradstreet's book makes a powerful contribution to our understanding of the cultural contexts of smell and history, particularly in this visual discipline in which we assume it must be marginalized. Upending assumptions about what constitutes the visual, Bradstreet offers a powerful model for what it means to 'see' smell in our archives of the past." -Holly Dugan, author of The Ephemeral History of Perfume: Scent and Sense in Early Modern England "A perfect profusion of pungent propositions, this book is a feast for the eyes as much as it is a delight to the nose." -Hannah Squire, PRS Review "With her investigation into the motif of smelling and the depiction of smells in art between 1850 and 1914, Christina Bradstreet ties in with current specialist discourses. Bradstreet brings together a large number of paintings and embeds them in an exciting network that takes into account literary and art-historical references as well as contemporary debates in medicine, psychology and urban planning." -Christian Sauer, 21: Inquiries into Art, History, and the Visual, "The first study of its kind, Christina Bradstreet's Scented Visions documents in stunning detail the important role of scent in nineteenth-century art. Accurate item description and pics. Great packing job with great care and emphasis on ensuring the item arrived undamaged using minimum packing materials and with conscientious use of recycled materials. Super-fast shipment at reasonable rate and arriving ahead of schedule. Great communication before and after transaction. Highly recommended A+ / 5 Star seller! Definitely one of my new favorite sellers and will purchase from again. Can't say enough praise for this seller. Highly Recommended!!!!!

This sellers "two day" shipping policy is baloney - it took a over five days and repeated emails before this item shipped. I almost thought I would have to request a refund from eBay. That being said, when it did ship, it was nicely packaged and arrived undamaged. I would not buy from this person again because they don't honor their own policies! I can only leave positive feedback because 1) the item DID arrive, and 2) it was as described. The rest wasn't a great experience.

I dislike complaining, but I'm unhappy with this transaction. The deck/book set, described as "like new," was mailed in such a flimsy envelope that it arrived twisted out of shape, to the point where one of the cards was stuck to exposed glue inside. I wrote to the seller about the situation but received no response. I didn't ask for a return because the price wasn't high, but even at this price I expect more care in packaging. (I have ordered other items from this seller that arrived intact.)
