As these prisoners fearfully struggled to make sense of what was happening to them, the women in their lives--wives, siblings, mothers, daughters--anxiously awaited their return. Though mystery shrouded the events that were to unfold, these women eventually learned the bitter truth. Sadly, they were ordered to remain silent due to post-war Poland’s dependence on Russia.Though he won an honorary Oscar in 2000, Wajda proves with KATYN that he has no intention of slowing down. Based on a novel by Andrzej Mularczyck (POST MORTEM), Wajda elevates it into a work of pure cinema. It helps that he’s chosen some truly accomplished collaborators: Pawel Edelman’s richly textured cinematography and Krzysztof Penderecki’s powerful, resonant score help to further establish an atmosphere of beautiful sorrow. The cast--including Maja Osteszewska, Artur Zmijewski, and Andrzej Chyra--rise to the challenge as well, bringing a humanity and warmth to their characters that pack an even more devastating emotional punch.

Unforgettable!
I found Katyn to be one of the most powerful and compelling films I have seen. The filming was absolutely superb and the acting flawless. The attention to detail (and fidelity to history) was extraordinarily meticulous. At times, I had to remind myself that it was not, after all, a documentary...yet it was certainly as close to one as is possible to create by those not present at the time or the place at which the events occurred. ...Truly a cinematic masterpiece! What I found fascinating about the story as depicted in the film was the interaction between the various political forces as experienced through the lives of its characters, including even the psychopaths who carried out the killing. It's incomprehensible to realize that, after being mutilated for six years during the war, ... I found Katyn to be one of the most powerful and compelling films I have seen. It's incomprehensible to realize that, after being mutilated for six years during the war, Poland was immediately plunged into the dark pit of Soviet terror...and remained there for more than four decades. Until this evening, I never actually had a 'feel' for what it must have been like for Poles when the 'Curtain' descended. The psychological damage associated with (and contributing to) Poland's post-war reality became an integral component of the Cold War mentality itself, with 'truth' transformed into mere illusion...fiction into reality. Yet, in contemplating the horrendous barbarity of Katyn, it is tempting to forget that, by the time of the massacre, millions of ethnic Russians had already been ground-up by Stalin's regime, and the atrocity, as bad as it was for Poland, was regarded by the Soviets at the time as merely another necessary step in the 'righteous struggle'. (It is impossible not to see the similarities inherent in the current cancer of radical Islam, with methodology only a 'True Believer' can justify.)

I was studying my Polish ancestry when I came across the movie "Katyn," about the slaughter of Poland's smartest, most spiritual, and leaders at the beginning of World War II. What made it really interesting and perhaps prophetic is that I watched my first copy about 6 months "before" the plane crash at Smolensk, Russia, right near the Katyn Forest massacre, which killed 96 of Poland's finest, smartest, most spiritual, and leaders including President of Poland just a year ago! When I first watched it, I was so moved that Russian Communists could have pulled off such a tragedy in 1949, while "blaming" the German Nazis! The producer, Andrej Wajda, says in the commentary also on he video that he didn't know which was worse: the horrible 20,000 murders of Poland's best men, or the fact that it ... The Winners of the War write its history, and I found much of what I've read in history books and school to be absolutely false, and worse yet propaganda to get our boys into war. I had purchased copies of the movie "Katyn" to anyone I thought my watch it, although of the copies I sent, no one seemed to care that World War II was a "lie," and a tool to further murder the White male. If we don't revise history and expose World War II and its hoax, we will continue in war for another 1,000 years, turning our white men into nothing more than bodybags while all other races, including Jews, will survive and thrive while we bleed to death.

excellent movie, true story, if you love history, especially WW2, this is a must see! there are so many great stories that are foreign films and because of that i have learned to love movies with captions!

We recently got a copy of this movie. We had to edit some things before we watched it as a family, but it was only 3 or 4 things. There was some minor bad language and there was also a reference to the so-called Holocaust at Auschwitz, something that never really happened. There was no "gassing by the Germans of 6,000,000 Jews". But other than that, it was a good movie. Great acting... great soundtrack...We recently got a copy of this movie. We had to edit some things before we watched it as a family, but it was only 3 or 4 things. There was some minor bad language and there was also a reference to the so-called Holocaust at Auschwitz, something that never really happened.
