I had heard about this documentary for a while before seeing it...such was the cult status this has established!! When I finally saw it, it is 'interesting' to say the least...funny yes, twisted, most definately....and an unusual combination of a documentary and comedy at the same time...but it works!! The documentary is based on an old joke, one that has been around for years in the comedy circuit and used by most comics at one point or another! However, what sets this joke apart, is the fact that each comic adds their own twist to the tale. It typically begins with an audition, a family of four - mom, dad, brother and sister; the pet dog usually puts in an appearance too....then it rapidly degenerates into a bad, bad, joke...sometimes too hard to stomach, other times hilarious!!! And this is what the documentary sets out to explore...as the producers invite over 100 celebrities...most of whom are comics to talk about or present their take on the joke!! There are too many names to mention but look out for comics as diverse as George Carlin, Drew Carey, Eddie Izzard, Billy Connolly, Jason Alexander, Lisa Lampanelli, Howie Mandel, Jon Stewart and Sarah Silverman to name but a few!! We also cannot forget Gilbert Gottfried who is shown with what is perhaps the funniest rendition of this joke at the Roast of Hugh Hefner!! He takes it to a whole new extreme and you cannot miss Rob Schidner's reaction which is simply hysterical!! This DVD is NOT for anyone who is easily offended...this takes offensive comedy to the next level and then some, and for me, some renditions were hard to hear, but for the most part this is a funny and entertaining look at how the joke evolves and comedy in general!!Read full review
My dad actually recommended this to me (he has been a bartender for 30 years, has a dry, Monty-Python-type sense of humor which I seem to have inherited) but w/ caution. Without going into the details he gave me a good descrpiton. I had to roll my eyes at the people who reviewed it as so apauling. Did they not read the description? DON'T WATCH THIS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A SERIOUS SENSE OF HUMOR. This is not for the morally superior or sqeamish! It is a documentary of a bunch of quite-famous comedians telling versions of an old Vaudville joke. It is graphic; it is dirty; it breaks all moral and social norms. IT IS ALSO JUST A JOKE!! Some were funnier than others. Of all people, I found Bob Saget's version to be pretty funny and I laughed at a ventriloquist guy telling it. I have to admit, though, don't know if it was the content or the actual timing of the comedians, I didn't laugh as much as I thought I would.Read full review
I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out (I was one of about 10 ten people that actually went to see it, I think). I have been trying to describe this movie to my friend at work and this is one of those movies that has to be seen to be appreciated. So, I decided to buy the DVD for him as one of his Christmas gifts. Once I decided to get him the DVD, my first stop was eBay, I was not disappointed. I found plenty of choices and had made my purchase in just a few short minutes. Back to the movie, like the title of my review says, this movie is NOT for the squeamish! The movie is shot like a documentary with dozens of comedians telling their version of the same joke. This joke, while it may not be well known to the general public, is very well known among the stand-up comedy world and has been for many years. It is sort of an "inside" joke among comedians and is very, very dirty. Depending on who tells this joke,it can become extremely dirty and in some cases quite a long joke as well. In this film you get to see the varying styles of joke telling among the comic community. You get to hear comics from the present and comic legends as well. To some, this joke can be anti-climatic, since the joke can be so long and drawn out, but that is part of the joke. Either you get it....or you don't. The biggest surprise for some people, is the incredibly, absolutely, extremely FOUL mouth of the one and only Bob Saget. Yes, the clean-cut, square headed dad, Danny Tanner from the sitcom "Full House". His version of the Aristocrats joke is by far the dirtiest and most shocking. If you are a fan of "blue" humor, this movie is for you. Enjoy!!Read full review
The concept is simple - top comedians tell the same joke, "The Aristocrats", in their own style and with their own filthy mannerisms and words. The result is a very guilty pleasure as the Aristocrats DVD is filthy and funny. The cast is stupendous (Gilbert Godfried is hands down the funniest!) and the DVD is well worth the purchase because the extra footage and scenes are as funny (if not better) than the films! A great movie for a humorous date or a night with some beers and BBQ. Comedians: Andy Dick, Billy Connolly, Bob Saget, Carrie Fisher, Dana Gould, Dave Thomas, David Brenner, David Steinberg, Don Rickles, Drew Carey, Eddie Izzard, Emo Philips, Eric Idle, Fred Willard, George Carlin, Gilbert Gottfried, Hank Azaria, Harry Shearer, Howie Mandel, Jason Alexander, Joe Franklin, Jon Stewart, Judy Gold, Lewis Black, Martin Mull, Michael McKean, Pat Cooper, Paul Reiser, Phyllis Diller, Rita Rudner, Robin Williams, Shelley Berman, Steven Wright, Susie Essman, Tim Conway, Wayne Cotter, Whoopi Goldberg I am an eBay employee and this review reflects my personal views and is not written on behalf of the eBay companyRead full review
Creative perversity from great comedians of the aughts thru today. Bob Saget gets the surprise potty mouth award. Postscript. If you substituted The Trumps for The Aristocrats in the punchline, it might be a documentary and not a laughter fest.
