Reviews
"This series is taking on one of SF's (and maybe all of literature's) primal jobs: the creation of a world with the scale and complexity of the real one." --- Locus "Hamilton's joy in science-tethered flights of fancy is infectious." --- Interzone "A space opera that is big, boisterous, and has something for everyone." --- Science Fiction Weekly

Synopsis
Space is not the only void... In AD 2600 the human race is finally beginning to realize its full potential. Hundreds of colonized planets scattered across the galaxy host a multitude of prosperous and wildly diverse cultures. Genetic engineering has pushed evolution far beyond nature's boundaries, defeating disease and producing extraordinary spaceborn creatures. Huge fleets of sentient trader starships thrive on the wealth created by the industrialization of entire star systems. And throughout inhabited space the Confederation Navy keeps the peace. A true golden age is within our grasp. But now something has gone catastrophically wrong. On a primitive colony planet a renegade criminal's chance encounter with an utterly alien entity unleashes the most primal of all our fears. An extinct race which inhabited the galaxy aeons ago called it "The Reality Dysfunction." It is the nightmare which has prowled beside us since the beginning of history. • Book 1 in The Night's Dawn Trilogy

Many different things are happening in different parts of the Confederation. Planets are being colonized, explorers are finding relics of distant civilizations, governments are positioning themselves in the galactic empire and the Military is trying to protect everyone. This is a huge Space Opera story that covers the lives of many different people on different plants who's lives are being changed by the discovery of a block of data from a long lost civilization that no one is sure happened to them. Peter F. Hamilton is perhaps one of the best authors I have found who writes these sweeping stores that seem to work out in the end and make a lot of sense. If you can handle the 1100+ pages this book offers it is a very good read. But keep in mind this is only book 1 in the Trilogy and the ...

  • Sci-fi world-building at its best.

I can think of very few series in which a richer, more creative and intriguing universe has been constructed. The Night's Dawn Trilogy explores the impact of advanced technology on humanity, and what happens to a species when the last of life's great mysteries are laid to rest. The characters are deep, displaying all the strengths and flaws of the best (and the worst) of us. In short, a great work, well suited for both sci-fi literature fans and sci-fi movie fans alike. If you read and loved Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos, or just watched and loved Star Wars, this trilogy is for you.
