Reviews
"Woolf's goal is not merely freedom and equality for race and sex and people; it is human civilization, a civilization which must be better, sounder, and surer than any we know. Toward so broad a purpose must we move if the human mind and spirit are to stand fearless in this world."--The New York Times --, "Woolf's goal is not merely freedom and equality for race and sex and people; it is human civilization, a civilization which must be better, sounder, and surer than any we know. Toward so broad a purpose must we move if the human mind and spirit are to stand fearless in this world."-- The New York Times, Like Virginia Woolf's better known A Room of One's Own, Three Guineas is still timely and well worth the effort required to read it. In this book-length essay, an English writer responds to a letter - from a society for preventing war and protecting culture and intellectual liberty - which asks "How in your opinion are we to prevent war?" and requests a one guinea donation. Her response examines this and two similar requests, one from a women's college building fund, and the other from a society promoting the employment of professional women. Each request for a guinea is seriously and thoroughly considered by questioning, in detail, why each of the needs exists: Why doesn't the English government support education for women? Why are women in England barred from professional work? And why is World War II imminent? With scathing humor, boundless dignity, and engaging detail, Virginia Woolf finds the answers to all three questions in the same source: "...we can best help you to prevent war not by repeating your words and following your methods but by finding new words and creating new methods... to assert 'the rights of all - all men and women - to the respect in their persons of the great principles of Justice and Equality and Liberty.'" -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Jesse Larsen , "Woolf's goal is not merely freedom and equality for race and sex and people; it is human civilization, a civilization which must be better, sounder, and surer than any we know. Toward so broad a purpose must we move if the human mind and spirit are to stand fearless in this world."--The New York Times

Synopsis
"Though we see the same world, we see it through different eyes." Setting out to answer the question "How are we to prevent war?" Virginia Woolf argues that the inequalities between women and men must first be addressed. Framing her arguments in the form of a letter, Woolf wittily ponders to whom--among the many who have requested it--she will donate a guinea. As she works out her reasons for which causes she will support, Woolf articulates a vision of peace and political culture as radical now as it was when first published on the eve of the Second World War. A founding text of cultural theory, Three Guineas can also help us understand the twenty-first-century realities of endless war justified by "unreal loyalties." "Witty, scornful, deeply serious...If you are a woman, or anti-war, or both, read it."--The New Yorker, "Witty, scornful, deeply serious...If you are a woman, or anti-war, or both, read it."-- The New Yorker "How are we to prevent war?" - o***5 (34)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseThe book was in the condition as described, so I wasn't expecting much. But actually it was in pretty good shape for my standards, I was surprised. Furthermore the book was sent in a cardboard box to protect it from damage during shipment. This box was evidence of the seller's intent to deliver a good product and I will definitely be going to this seller before other in the future.
