About this product

Product Information

Legendary British director Sir Richard Attenborough (GANDHI, CRY FREEDOM) made his directorial debut with the scathingly satirical antiwar musical OH! WHAT A LOVELY WAR. Based on Joan Littlewood's 1963 stage play, the film reimagines the tragic conflagration of World War I as a macabre amusement park in which ghastly images of war's futility--such as generals playing leapfrog on the battlefield while their soldiers die around them--are set to farcical musical numbers like "The Bells of Hell" and "Hanging on the Old Barbed Wire." Attenborough assembled a virtual who's-who of iconic British thespians--including Dirk Bogarde, John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier, Michael Redgrave, Ralph Richardson, and Maggie Smith--to enact the masterful pacifist diatribe that was seen as a thinly veiled commentary on the Vietnam War at the time of its 1969 premiere--and remains just as timely and relevant at its 2006 re-release.

I'm excited! Picked this as a late christmas present for my boyfriend hehee! It came on the first day of ETA, it was packaged with bubble wrap and extra paper. The box said "fragile" on it. It appears to be the authentic thing. I left it in the original plastic because I know my boyfriend will be excited to open it himself! The box set is in mint condition, again, with the original wrap, as it was described. I'm very happy with this seller. Suoer thankful!

  • Perfect title

War is hell for the soldiers at the front while the high officer corps drink and cavort putting medals on themselves for the blood and guts suffered by their men. This is especially true of the British officers which the movie depicts perfectly. The "Huns" stated in that war that the British army is composed of lions being led by donkeys.

  • Oh! What a Lovely War.

This movie is very popular in Europe, where I first saw it. It is a spoof of all the movies which glorify war, and demean the poor slobs who have to go and fight. Very tongue in cheek, with all the religious motifs, including the perfect rationale of "Well, God is on our side". The music is interspersed well, using british songs which were popular during the First Word War. It is quite interesting to watch the same type of propaganda being used today as an excuse for an unpopular and un-necessary war. Well done, and well performed, with no mercy shown to the high ranking Generals and Diplomats who orchestrated the insanity from 1914 to 1918. Worth a watch, but will solidify your sense of avoiding war at any cost. Tomp3801

  • Veddy veddy British history

An all-star cast and a musical with great numbers - about the senselessness of World War I. You might want to read up a bit about the general details of the diplomatic situation leading up to the war, otherwise you will probably be pretty lost in the stylized representation of it in the first 20% of the movie. A subtle hint for those who, like me, tend not to pick up on this - there is no graphic death and destruction in this movie (hard to imagine when discussing WWI) but notice the use of the poppy, the British symbol for veterans' day and veterans' cemeteries. This is not for casual consumption. Get through the first 20-30 minutes and get adjusted to the English accents, and you're hooked. This is without a doubt the most powerful war movie _without_ gore that you will ever ...

  • Superb and moving

This movie is beautifully filmed, filled with amazing actors and uses music to show the futility and waste of war. I saw it in a theatre when it was first released and was very happy to see it finally released on DVD. Well worth the owning and watching.
