About this product

Product Information

Morton (Gabriele Ferzetti), the power-hungry owner of a railroad company, hires Frank (Henry Fonda, playing against type), a gunfighter without a conscience, to kill anyone who stands in the way of the completion of the railroad. After Frank murders land owner Brett McBain (Frank Wolff), McBain's widow (Claudia Cardinale) hires two killers of her own to protect her and gain revenge: a mysterious, harmonica-playing desperado (Charles Bronson) and his rogue sidekick (Jason Robards). Using techniques previously unseen in the genre, Sergio Leone utilizes close-ups, color, and Ennio Morricone's trademark score to create a tense and somber meditation on death which is widely considered to be one of the best westerns in cinematic history. Soon-to-be legendary Italian directors Dario Argento (SUSPIRIA) and Bernardo Bertolucci (THE LAST EMPEROR) collaborated with Leone on the screenplay.

I watch this movie at least once a year; I purchased this copy for a friend.

Another engaging epic by Sergio Leone, whose Man-with-no-name sagas brought another dimension to the Western. With all the realism and grit that makes the story as honest as each day, Leone chose all his actors as if they only had to don the costumes to be the characters whose role they played. The honesty of the portrayals makes the characters more than just believable. Using Ennio Morricone for the musical score adds another piece to the epic, by assigning each character with his/her own signature musical score, as they appearedin the story. Leone also used many of his former colleagues to achieve the winning formula in producing this epic.

  • A Clasic Western, well told, well worth the time to view it

An epic Italian western spanning several years. Henry Fonda plays the bad, bad guy, and Charles Bronson plays the good good guy. Jason Robards plays a good bad guy or is it a bad good guy. You get to choose. And Claudia Cardinale plays a good bad girl it is it a bad good girl. Again you get to choose. The story is epic in scope: an entrepreneur comes west, buying up lots of cheap land where a railroad could come through. When the RR commits to building thru his land, the entrepreneur and his family are murdered by land grabbers, but they somehow miss his new bride (Cardinale) and she inherits. Cardinale is then by turns romanced, threatened, scammed and coerced to give up her inheritance, and so the story goes... Filmed in Spain, this has great visuals, great music, and terrific ...

  • An All Time Classic Western and One of the Greatest Film Ever Made!

One of the greatest films ever made and a top 5 western. The music alone is a work of musical art. I have listened to Orchestras in the North America, all over Europe, South America and Asia perform the entire score. The film itself is an accurate representation of the true America West - no clean cut folks. The story is mesmerizing and its difficult to keep one's eye off the screen. All film collectors need to acquire tis film.

  • A "Best Western"

This film is Sergio Leone's American-budget Western made after his Clint Eastwood "Dollar" trilogy of films. It had a scope and budget far exceeding "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", and it is a 2-hour 45-minute tour de force for Leone and his crew. The set-work is stunning, and very different from the run-of-the-mill U.S. studio Western. Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale and Jason Robards really hit their roles perfectly. Chas. Bronson does a good job as well, though his role is the most predictable and straight-forward of the leading roles in the movie. The "extra's" on the Collector's Edition are well worthwhile, although listening to all the commentary over the film is not as good as film fans sometimes hope, simply because it detracts from enjoying the film. One thing many people ...

  • A must see in times of Batman, Spiderman, Everyman...

I saw this film for the first time probably 30 years ago and still remember most of the scenes and especially the music. However, the use of silence, in image and in sound, is probably what makes it the best western around and one of the best movies I've ever seen. Sergio Leone does not need computer animated graphics, does not even need you to see what is going on (the scene outside the roadside bar when we first meet Cheyenne, or when the first shot gets fired at the family killing), does not need to do a lot of talking, just needs fabulous acting and fabulous photography. Of course the music of Enio Morricone makes it even stronger, giving each character its own "soundtrack" (in today's terms), but I am quite sure that even as a silent movie this one would come a very long way. Fonda, ...
