A surprising duet
The writer followed the late Bill Evans for a long time. A brilliant piano player, in the tradition of Powell and Tatum, Bill Evans played with a lot of great names in jazz, and was the leader of several trios, including one with the shortlived but dazzling bassist Scott LeFaro. He also did the amazing "Conversations with Myself," which not only demonstrated his remarkable facility for turning himself into a trio (with the help of tracking), but that Bill Evans on three tracks was almost as complex as Art Tatum on one. ;-) Tony Bennett, whose reputation hardly needs burnishing, did not strike the writer as someone who would play with Evans. Both were at the top rank of their professions as soloists. Evans was not an accompanist. And, in this album he isn't an ... The writer followed the late Bill Evans for a long time. The album contains both their 1976 and 1977 sessions, plus many outtakes. A terrific buy!
