About this product

Product Information

We're all natural born chemists. Every time we cook, clean, take a shower, drive a car, use a solvent, such as fingernail polish remover, or perform any of the countless everyday activities that involve complex chemical reactions we're doing chemistry. You might even say that we're all participating in a grand chemistry experiment that started with the first human who mixed pigments to do a cave painting. Why do so many of us desperately resist learning chemistry when we're young? Maybe it has something to do with the way it's taught in school. Now there's a fun, easy way to learn basic chemistry. Whether you're studying chemistry in school and you're looking for a little help making sense of what's being taught in class, or you're just into learning new things for their own sake, Chemistry For Dummies gets you rolling with all the basics of matter and energy, atoms and molecules, acids and bases, and much more. In no time you'll: Understand atomic structure and function Use the Periodic Table of elements Know what happens when matter changes from one state to another Explore ionic and covalent bonding Get a handle on chemical reactions Perform simple chemistry calculations Understand acids, bases, pHs, antacids, and gases Make sense Boyle's Law, Avrogadro's Law and other key laws in chemistry Packed with examples of chemistry in action in everyday life, Chemistry For Dummies is a fascinating exploration of broad range of topics in chemistry, including: States of matter, from the macroscopic to the microscopic Understanding how the elements are arranged in the Periodic Table Nuclear chemistry, radioactivity and radioactive decay Positive and negative ions and ionic compounds Covalent bonding in covalent compounds Chemical reactions, chemical equilibrium, and electrochemistry The mole and how it's used to calculate chemical reactions Great serendipitous discoveries in chemistry Environmental chemistry Written in plain English and requiring only basic math, Chemistry For Dummies puts you on the fast track to mastering the basics of chemistry.

For the Non-Chemist in All of Us

I have always had problems with chemistry. I only just received this book. So I have done little more than thumb through it at this point. However, with what I remember from High School chemistry, I believe this book might be a big help. I plan on reviewing the materials in this book. Then I will be looking into obtaining a similar book on Bio-Chemistry. It is the annoying and possibly criminal practices in the medical profession of prescribing medicines for patients only to find severe -- even dangerous interactions between prescribed medications; effects when pharmacies profess they cannot get critical medications and taking these medicines suddenly stop; or the prescribing physician(s) get the patient started on medications and inform them after a month or so that missing two to ...

  • Well worth the money -- buy it and keep it!

I'm taking some graduate level courses in Biochemistry as part of my advanced degree requirements. It's been some years since my last Chemistry course, so I needed a quick and dirty reference that would succinctly clarify concepts. Actually, I bought quite a few books like this one, but ended up returning all but "Chemistry for Dummies." The other books were either too elementary, without clarity, or as complicated as the textbook I'm using this semester. I have to laugh because I actually enjoy reading it! If you need a quick reference source that's just to help you understand problems and concepts, this is it. This is not a replacement for a full text, but a good supplemental resource.

  • "Chemistry For Dummies" - ideal for prenursing students

This book is ideal for prenursing students. Far less expensive than textbooks - even used textbooks - chosen by even community colleges, but it has all the same material or almost the same that was in the prenursing chemistry course I took. It also would be the ultimate review guide for those in prenursing chemistry courses - and would easily enable you to get an "A" on every test! (Opinion of someone who got an "A" in the course.)

  • Game changer

This book really helped me understand the chem part of my physics class. Plain English and humor make this enjoyable to read!
