Synopsis
In The Tools of Screenwriting , David Howard and Edward Mabley illuminate the essential elements of cinematic storytelling, and reveal the central principles that all good screenplays share. The authors address questions of dramatic structure, plot, dialogue, character development, setting, imagery, and other crucial topics as they apply to the special art of filmmaking. Howard and Mabley also demonstrate how, on a practical level, the tools of screenwriting work in sixteen notable films, including Citizen Cane , E.T. , One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest , Rashomon , The Godfather , North by Northwest , Chinatown , and s ex, lies, and videotape .

    • Excellent Screenwriting Resource

Howard and Mabley's The Tools of Screenwriting is my favorite book about writing, and I have read many such guides, including Syd Field's books. The authors explain the components of screenwriting and storytelling simply and concisely, offering insightful comments and analyses of notable films as illustrations of their points. Do you need to read a book about writing to be a good writer? No. However, as a writer and former film student, I find that The Tools of Screenwriting is a useful resource. It's also an interesting read for anyone interested in the script-writing stages of the filmmaking process.
