INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER PARADE MAGAZINE - ONE OF FALL'S MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS AARP'S MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF FALL CRIMEREADS - ONE OF THE BEST TRADITIONAL MYSTERIES OF THE YEAR GLOBE AND MAIL - TOP 100 BOOKS OF THE YEAR CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR - ONE OF THE BEST NOVELS OF THE YEAR KIRKUS REVIEWS - ONE OF THE BEST MYSTERIES/THRILLERS OF THE YEAR LIBRARY JOURNAL - ONE OF THE BEST CRIME FICTION BOOKS OF THE YEAR The 16th novel by #1 bestselling author Louise Penny finds Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec investigating a sinister plot in the City of Light On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand's godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. Walking home together after the meal, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and critically injured in what Gamache knows is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the elderly man's life. When a strange key is found in Stephen's possession it sends Armand, his wife Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d'Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded, works of art. It sends them deep into the secrets Armand's godfather has kept for decades. A gruesome discovery in Stephen's Paris apartment makes it clear the secrets are more rancid, the danger far greater and more imminent, than they realized. Soon the whole family is caught up in a web of lies and deceit. In order to find the truth, Gamache will have to decide whether he can trust his friends, his colleagues, his instincts, his own past. His own family. For even the City of Light casts long shadows. And in that darkness devils hide.

Reviews
Praise for All the Devils Are Here "As always, Penny's mystery is meticulously constructed and reveals hard truths about the hidden workings of the world--as well as the workings of the Gamache family. But there's plenty of local color, too, with a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower to escape surveillance and a luxurious suite at the Hotel George V for good measure. If you're new to Penny's world, this would be a great place to jump in. Then go back and start the series from the beginning." -- Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "Penny's series has always been about the complexities and sustaining glories of family, and here she takes that theme even further, revealing fissures in the Gamache clan, but also showing the resilience and love at its root. Series devotees will revel in both Penny's evocation of Paris--every bit as sumptuous as her rendering of Three Pines--and in the increased role she allots to librarian Reine-Marie, whose research skills are crucial to untying the Gordian knot at the mystery's core." -- Booklist (starred review) "Exceptional... Penny's nuanced exploration of the human spirit continues to distinguish this brilliant series." -- Publishers Weekly (starred review) "The strengths of this latest procedural from the inimitable Penny will attract her longtime fans and also draw in new admirers. A deft touch with plotting, sensitive characterization, and the author's warmth and humanity make this a must-have mystery, especially for collections owning the rest of series." -- Library Journal (starred review) Praise for A Better Man "'A Better Man,' with its mix of meteorological suspense, psychological insight and criminal pursuit, is arguably the best book yet in an outstanding, original oeuvre." --Tom Nolan, Wall Street Journal "Enchanting...one of [Gamache's] more ennobling missions." --Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review "Pensive and moral Quebec police inspector Armand Gamache is justly beloved, and Penny's evocative prose is unfailingly admirable." -- Seattle Times " The deeper reward lies in how the books probe the psyches of Gamache, his family and colleagues, as well as this circle of small-town bohemians, the author picking off her characters, psychologically at least, one by one." -- The Globe and Mail "The appeal of this series and especially of Gamache himself has always been Penny's ability to show her hero moving from the tangible, brutal facts of murder to the emotions within, the stories in the blood. There are multiple stories, often contradictory, to be found in the many-tentacled web of human tragedy and suffering that Gamache teases to the surface in this moving exploration of ties that both bind and destroy." -- Booklist , starred review "Wrenching... Penny explores the depths of human emotion, both horrifying and sublime. Her love for her characters and for the mystical village of Three Pines is apparent on every page."-- Publishers Weekly , starred review "Penny's lyrical writing opens up Gamache's soul-searching in an almost poetic way. "A Better Man," it turns out, isn't so much a novel to wrap up certain story lines in this 14-book series, but one to breathe new life into them." -- Minneapolis Star Tribune, Praise for All the Devils Are Here "What stays with the reader are the tender passages, the human insights, the reminders of what makes life worth living." -- Wall Street Journal "Penny excels at creating a sense of place, and she brings Paris to life with scenes small (a favorite garden at the Rodin museum) and big (the top of the Eiffel Tower). We walk -- or, when necessary, run -- through the streets of Paris, taste lemon tarts and mourn the fire damage to Notre Dame." -- St. Louis Post-Dispatch "Penny excels at capturing the inner life, whether it's a criminal's or a resentful child's. Series novices and die-hard fans alike will be left breathless--and moved." -- People Book of the Week "Penny's books are always a cause for celebration, and this one is superb in every regard." -- BookPage f you relish mysteries with fast-paced action, police treachery, old fashioned charm with a taint of power and corruption, you will definitely want to deep-dive into All the Devils Are Here . . . This is a rare novel that will definitely linger in your thoughts long after finishing the last page." -- Fresh Fiction "The intricate plot, nuanced relationships, and beautifully evoked Paris setting make this a real standout in Penny's wildly popular series. The dignified, cerebral Gamache is a detective for the ages, a good man in an often-impossible job whose greatest skill may be his insight into the human heart." -- PBS.com "I love the Chief Inspector Gamache novels and author Louise Penny has outdone herself with [ All the Devils Are Here ]." -- Red Carpet Crash "As always, Penny's mystery is meticulously constructed and reveals hard truths about the hidden workings of the world--as well as the workings of the Gamache family. Gamache is an explorer of the human psyche, and the care he takes with the victims, their friends and family, as well as his own allows this series and his character continually to surprise, delight, and enthrall. Here, even the loving relationship between Gamache and his son, Daniel, is challenged. Louise Penny's stories are fine wine waiting to be uncorked. Read, relax & enjoy.

I highly recommend reading at least one of Louise Penny's books before beginning this one. Even though the "usual" characters are not present, they will give you some insight into where the stars of this book have come from. You will breathe in the essence of this man, Armand Gamache. His complexities continue to unfold to feed us a story unlike the others. But, it is important not to forget who he has been and what he has done up to this point. You will not be disappointed.

  • A nice change of locale for Inspector Gamache

I found "All the Devils are Here" to be a compelling read; I liked it very much. The last few Gamache novels have been very dark; I didn't enjoy them as much as the earlier books. Perhaps because "All the Devils are Here" has a totally different setting -- and only a few familiar characters -- it is a more enjoyable experience. I will read it again!

  • Louise's Latest Book Stands Alone

Even if you haven't read all her others you will still enjoy this one. Very compelling and character development the best. She takes you all over Paris in this one. Many twists and turns....surprises! Helps if you know a little French.
