Synopsis
Few areas in the country can compare to Currituck County when it comes to duck hunting. Since the late 1800s, hunters have traveled to the county for the abundunt wildfowl and outstanding hunting conditions, and for many gunners it has been the defintion of a sportsman's paradise. One such gunner is Travis Morris, whose family has lived in Currituck County for generations. For more than sixty years, Morris has plied the county's waters in search of mallards, widgeons, teal, coot and more, all the while amassing a wealth of knowledge on the history and tradition of duck hunting in the area., Enter the area of Currituck Sound. Here lies a haven for hunt clubs where vendors can sell their homegrown produce along the highway. Travis Morris's family has lived in Coinjock, North Carolina, and Currituck Beach for generations. This is his story. It is not a record of his real estate business or of his time in the Coast Guard. Instead, it is a series of essays that tell of the special moments that compose a man's life. For Morris, most of those moments involve ducks. Morris realized that duck hunting would become a large part of his life when he went on his first hunting excursion in 1938 at the age of six. Now seventy-three, he is not only still cluck hunting but has introduced his son and his grandchildren to the early morning sport. Stories include Mr. Casey Jones, whose word was "just as good as if it was sworn to you on a stack of Bibles," a 1989 event that became known as the "Piney Island Dove-Hunt-Turned-Turkey-Massacre" in which a neighbor's dog was tried and held accountable on multiple counts of turkey murder and an entry written by Morris's grandson, Chandler Sawyer, about hunting with his grandfather. If you are a duck hunter, you will be able to understand and appreciate Morris's devotion to the sport; if you have never lifted a single-barrel 410-hammer shotgun to your shoulder, these delightful stories may be just what it takes to get you out onto the water to enjoy this age-old sport.
