From realistic skating movement to full control modes that put you in the front office to be the general manager of a National Hockey League franchise, this game is still one of the all-time greats when it comes to hockey on the PlayStation 3, even when compared to recent installments in this franchise. Released in 2012, the 22nd entry in this successful EA Sports franchise features a number of big upgrades that are evident as soon as the puck hits the ice. This is the first season where EA Sports introduced True Performance skating, based on real-world physics and featuring more than 1,000 gameplay animations. That makes every goalie save and every hard body check look and feel more realistic, and gives you more control of the performance and style of your players in every game. The game’s publisher, Electronic Arts, also added its EA Sports Hockey IQ artificial intelligence system, which makes each computer-controlled player aware of every other player on the ice. It makes for a more realistic experience and a greater challenge for players, which also makes the game much more replayable. GM Connected, one of the game’s most popular modes, lets you play, manage, or coach a team with, and against, friends in your own 30-team league. You and your friends will play a full 82-game season of hockey, and everyone is free to play how they like. In one league, you can have teams that are played manually going up against teams that are only coached by others, for example. It’s also set up for dynasty play, so you’ll be in total control of your roster across subsequent seasons for up to 25 years of in-game play, for serious PlayStation NHL fans who really want to test their scouting mettle. NHL Moments Live is another new mode for this installment of the game. You’ll be faced with tough challenges based on exciting performances in recent hockey history, where you can either recreate – or rewrite – those amazing achievements right at home on your PS3, from hat tricks to stunning comebacks to goalie shutouts. Combine all those new improvements with the stellar gameplay PS3 fans are used to, featuring real players and ratings based on the NHL’s 2011-12 season. "NHL 13" also improved upon NHL 12’s rating system by rating players based on their position, rather than their role on the team (such as “enforcer”), which makes selecting your lineups easier to do on a team/position level. For PS3 trophy hunters, the game features 48 trophies: 34 bronze, 11 silver, 2 gold, and 1 platinum. Play as your favorite NHL players, including Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, Pavel Datsuyuk, Evgeni Malkin, Shea Weber, Kris Letang, Ryan Suter, Henrik Lundqvist, Carey Price, and Roberto Luongo.     Honestly, the best hockey game (as of at least 2016)

    Having played every hockey game thru 2016 I can honestly say this is by far the best, provided you tweak the game settings. I recommend bumping up the speed, accuracy, and hitting. A large advancement from 2012 (more than the usual tiny incremental changes), NHL 13 is the first one that feels like you're controlling a real hockey player with momentum. The game manages to look very smooth and natural as well, including many subtle animations that somehow manage to not interfere with crisp gameplay and control. Skating around the opposition and executing a poke check are extremely satisfying, as is carving your way into the neutral zone or delivering a massive hit. The graphics are also a leap forward from 2012, to the point where it's hard to believe this is running on PS3/360. It ...

    Super-fun Hockey Title (Stanley Cup Hawks, BABY!)
