About this product

Product Information

Set in Saigon, Vietnam, in 1952 during the French Indochina war, THE QUIET AMERICAN is based on the mystery story by Graham Greene, and directed by Phillip Noyce. A middle-aged British reporter for the London Times, Thomas Fowler (Michael Caine), has been working in Vietnam, covering politics and enjoying the local culture. He lives with a beautiful young woman, Phuong (Do Thi Hai Yen), a taxi dancer who he rescued from that undesirable profession. He cannot marry her, because he is already married to a Catholic woman in London who does not believe in divorce. But he truly loves her. When a young American doctor, Alden Pyle (Brendan Fraser), falls in love with Phuong, threatening to take her from Fowler, everything changes. Not only is Fowler's romantic life put in danger, but he begins to uncover disturbing information about the U.S.'s involvement in the war.An intriguing and atmospheric love story as well as a riveting mystery, THE QUIET AMERICAN features top-notch performances from Caine and Fraser, who maintain an eager intensity throughout the film. Combining the mysterious beauty of Saigon with the strangeness of the war, the film is suspenseful and effective.

Michael Caine is breathtaking in this entertaining and still relevant film

The quiet American is Michael Cane's best work. Also the movie feels very relevant regarding foreign adventures he US has become entangled in, both in the past and today.

  • The Best Vietnam movie

After visiting Vietnam, I rented all the movies about Vietnam and this was a clear favorite. (I also liked Indochine and The Deer Hunter better than the famous war movies.) The Quiet American 2003 was actually filmed in Vietnam and has great scenes from both Saigon and the countryside. It is set in colonial Vietnam and is a history lesson on how the French lost control and the events that precipitated America's involvement. Brendan Fraser does fantastic as an undercover CIA agent that meets a British reporter (Michael Caine). The other main character is beautiful Vietnamese woman whom both Fraser and Caine love. Many say this film is an allegory with these three characters representing Europe's tired imperialism, America's misguided idealism, and Vietnam's resulting plight. I think it's a ...

  • Intrigue, suspense, love & surprise = they nailed it!!

Unlike the Audie Murphy version, this one was true to the book, as well as to reality. It seems ironic that this movie was made before the American invasion of Iraq and the book was written before our invasion of Vietnam! The movie portrays, among other things, the ignorance-based "idealism" that is used to drive America to war and the deceptions that are used to justify it. Different cultures, same arrogant assumption that somehow America can "save" others by going into civil war situations in other cultures with massive military force. A good story with insights into the European/American colonial approach to the world.

  • Quiet American

This is the second time Graham Greene's book has been made into a movie. Can't go wrong with Michael Caine. Great movie!
