About this product

Product Information

Two-time Newbery Award-winning author Lois Lowry brings a brand-new, beautiful diary to the Dear America series! Suddenly orphaned by the Spanish flu epidemic in the fall of 1918, eleven-year-old Lydia Pierce and her fourteen-year-old brother, Daniel, of Portland, Maine, are taken by their uncle to be raised in the Shaker community at Sabbathday Lake. Thrust into the Shakers' unfamiliar way of life, Lydia must grapple with a new world that is nothing like the one she used to know. Now separated from her beloved brother, for men and women do not mix in this community, Lydia must adjust to many changes. But in time, and with her courageous spirit, she learns to find the joy in life again.

Little expensive for the for a book with a large marker mark across the cover. Otherwise the book is in great shape!

  • THUMBS UP for the Dear America book, The Diary of Lydia Amelia Pierce!

This book was purchased on behalf of my ten year old grand daughter as she has taken an interest in reading this particular series. The "Dear America" books strive to preserve our homeland heritage, and they carry positive values to our youth. I would most definitely purchase another book of this genre in the future! Although I have not personally read this book, I support preservation of historical stories, and I consider The Diary of Lydia Amelia Pierce to be an uplifting example for children of various ages to learn about the past. I'm sure there are other great books of this sort capturing stories of legacy, and I encourage our youth to explore these adventures. What a terrific learning tool! Thank you for giving me this opportunity to review this product. Sincerely, Clare ...
