Courage, Strength, Hardiness
A great story about life in the Arizona Territory. For me, the book started slowly but gained in interest as I read on. It actually got to where I was anxious to continue reading it each day and it was hard to put it down at night. Sara and Jack are compelling figures and their story is a great example of strong people overcoming the trials and obstacles that people faced in earlier times in our country. 98% of the time their story rings true. The author has done a good job of growing her characters and storyline as day after day unfolds. I highly recommend this book for ages 16 and up. Joe Vargas

These Is My Words
I am reading this book for my Arizona based book club. It tells the story of a woman's development during the period of the Arizona Territory. It describes a whole gamit of real life emotions, tragedies, celebrations and adventures. Although it is slow reading at times, it was a wonderful journey to read and participate in. I would strongly recommend it for any book club whether from the southwest or not. It has a limited publication at this time, so I was delighted that it was still available through Ebay.
Not impressed but enjoyed by many & that's what makes a good book club.
Was the selection in my book club and I was not impressed. However, many in my group loved it but I did not think it was realistic and felt like a "romance" novel which genre's I don't read. I think I would have enjoyed reading the actual diaries that were used to create the storyline. I will say in the beginning of the book I thought "this could be good". Alas, it went downhill for me as the story evolved. I am more of a fan of non-fiction such as "Behind The Beautiful Forevers" which was totally disliked by some in my reading group. I think it's good to be challenged and out of your comfort zone so regardless of preferences I will finish any book that I have started.
These Is My Words
I read incessantly. This book captivated me and I have read the sequel to it Sarah's Quilt and found it equally well written and a real 'interest holder'. I then went back and reread These is My Words and found it more interesting the second time through. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to escape from the formula novels that we find ourselves swimming in these days and the endless sequels. A story set in the late 1800s of life on the frontier from the perspective of a young adult girl, the trials that came to her in the process of just living her daily life and of her fierce independence and competence which was the side benefit she acquired. I am a man and found this book one of my all time favorites.
Why I Totally Enjoyed "These is my Words"
This is one of the best books I have ever read. It has the capability of transforming the reader to another time and place completely. The characters are so real that it seems as though you are right there with them. I laughed, I cried, I read until I was bleary eyed and couldn't read another word until I slept a while - it was that good! I had no idea until I read this book how hard the lives were for Pioneer families. The love story woven within the chapters is exquisite. The births, the deaths, the dogs, the horses, the Indians, the storms, the landscapes - each were described in a way that you could picture the scene clearly in your mind. A must read!!
