    the book is the best part of it all

    Do you need this tool to get codes out of a Ford ECC IV system? No. You can do it with a paperclip and count the flashes of the 'check engine' light (that's basically what this tool does) but what makes getting this worthwhile is the book that comes with it and that guides you step by step through the test procedure AND gives you the code readouts. The way I look at it is, the book is what you buy, the tool is a nice extra.
