Equip your home server with a reliable, high-capacity hard drive when you replace its current HDD with the Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003. The hard disk platters in the Seagate Barracuda series enjoy low power consumption and use recyclable materials. The ST1000DM003 has a capacity of 1TB, a cache size of 64MB, and a fast rotational speed of 7200 RPM. The high RPM numbers mean that this giant 1TB capacity won't slow you down. You can write files to any sector without taking a performance hit. Seagate made sure you'd be able to write to the whole capacity even if your operating system counts hard drive size using binary measures. Apple server users can attach this hard drive and their operating systems will immediately show it as a 1TB volume. If it's a secondary hard drive, then they'll be given the opportunity to initialize it. Users of Windows Server system software as well as those who have a home media server that runs Linux might see another number. Even if this figure is less than 1000GB, you can still write to the entire capacity of this internal storage device. These operating systems might measure hardware differently, so Seagate tested the disk platters to make sure the full capacity was still there. It uses a SATA interface for reading and writing data on disk and can hit data transfer speeds as high as 6Gb/s. It's compatible with most modern SATA jacks. Small form factor desktop computers that feature SATA cables will even be able to detect this HDD without issues. If it doesn't show up, then you might simply have to build a new BIOS. The SATA cables will take care of the rest, which makes it useful for those who want to build a gaming desktop. You won't have to worry about your CPU having to calculate the physical order of cylinder, heads, and sectors. This disk supports LBA technology, which allows it to communicate with your operating system through the concept of logical blocks. This is an excellent guard against data corruption. It even automatically marks out bad blocks to prevent damage to important information. Seagate's AcuTrac servo technology ensures that the drive performs reliably while the Instant Erase Secure feature thoroughly wipes the hard drive whenever you format it. These features are still accessible when accessing the disks from a USB adapter. You could even connect this to other drives in an array to create a 2TB or 3TB logical disk. These drives are compatible with RAID accessories, which takes all the guesswork out of making arrays. Network-attached storage (NAS) routers can also work with this model when connected via an adapter. Routers generally see them as an average SSD volume, which makes it easy to use them as network storage for video. Since it provides support for hard links, you could even use them with open-source FreeBSD-based networking solutions. They support shared disk file systems run on top of a SAN-NAS hybrid connection. This makes them suitable for provisioning file services to a home network.

    My hard drive of choice for several years, but Seagate DiscWizard and/or Windows10 is creating formatting/disk copy problems

    I've bought 30-40 of these hard drives for computer builds because they were reliable, but also because Seagate DiscWizard transfer software (free for use if one drive is a Seagate) was easy to use and dependable to copy my standard hard drive load to an empty drive. In the last year it appears that either updates to Seagate DiscWizard or Windows 10 was making it impossible to copy my standard computer build load onto these or any other drives. I've tried a couple of other than Seagate drive brands and had issues with them too, so the problem may be Windows and not Seagate DiscWizard or Seagate drives. I've also tried other transfer software and had similar issues. Too bad, because I love building desktops but these issues have caused me to stop. Whatever happened to "user-friendly" ...

    Ok, these drives were a great value for the $$$

    I'm building a dedicated DAW and needed some storage drives for it. I consider Seagate to be the most reliable for this. So these were a great solution for my needs. There's no bad sectors and they are very quiet for an HDD. And they show as an apple drive so that's actually not a bad thing since I plan on doing a triple boot Hackintosh/Linux/Windows. For my purposes these will provide plenty of storage.

    The right part # for an HP Pavillion Model 550-153w Desktop (Full Factory Reset), if your original drive has failed...As long as you have the Windows Pre-Activated Win 10 Rescue Disk Set (a 4 disk rescue set can be made from a working bootable HP Pav. Model 550-153w), or access to a bootable Recovery Image (usually set as (Recovery Image (D:) on the original drive (usually a drive partition that is approx. 15.1 GB), or you can copy the sector with the Recover Image on it as that is a discontinued HP Original Restore Disk Set.
