The sumptuous pastel effects-train lights seen through falling snow and a vertiginous overhead view, from Santa's sleigh, of his popular city-make this one of Van Allsburg's most treasured visions., As always, the forms are sculptured, the perspectives as dazzling as they are audacious, the colors rich and elegant, the use of light and shadow masterly., "The Polar Express Is Magic Indeed.", "One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. Classic children's book.

I think it will become a children's Christmas classic movie and book for years to come. It is beautifully illustrated and has meaningful content.

    Sloppy shipping.

The book was more or less fine- a few tears on the jacket. But the packaging was a Digiorno pizza box that was tattered, smelly and sloppy. Spend the two minutes to pick up a free clean cardboard box from the grocery store vs one that had food directly in it. Just weird.

  • Teh Polar Express

I already own this storybook but my original book was lost and I have been trying to find the same one to replace it with. My original had a special authors page that was burned and signed by Chris Van Allsburg and to this day I haven't been able to find one just like it. I purchased this one in hopes that it was the one....but it wasn't. My youngest child is in kindergarten this year and when I recieved the book I decided to donate it to his classroom so children in years to come can share in this wonderful childrens christmas classic! I have been sharing this story with my own children for 17 years and when it is time to pack up all the christmas decorations, this book goes with them so it always seems like a new story from year to year! It has been incorporated as one of our family ...

  • A train? Santa? In one book? YES!

My son is at that age where he is in awe of trains and in awe of Santa Claus. We have seen the movie over and over so, I wanted my son to have the book. Chris Van Allsburg writes a simple story of a boy on Christmas Eve, whose friends have lost the magic of Christmas, waits to hear the sound of Santa's sleigh. If you are looking for this book to be just like the movie, sorry it's not. It is a simple story about a boy who got on a train and saw Santa. I found it to be very nice, quick, easy reading material for me and my son. Allsburg's words are simple and understandable for a young reader but, at the same time it flows with detail and imagery that someone of any age would appreciate. Allsberg also did the illustrations. Like his writing style, at first glance may appear a simple ...

  • Award-winning book - story & artwork

The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg is an excellent story with outstanding artwork that stirs the wondering spirit of the child within all of us. It received the prestiged Caldecott Medal through extensive review by nationally recognized experts in children's literature. The book inspired the 2004 movie of the same name that was a featured Best Ever Christmas Film in 2005. This book is a perfect addition to anyone's collection of prized reading.
