About this product

Product Information

THIRTEEN is Catherine Hardwicke's explosive portrait of teenage girls at their very worst. Mean, manipulative, conniving, and utterly out of control, these skinny, sexy, drug-addicted, 13-year-old time bombs are nothing short of terrifying. Hardwicke's movie is brilliant in its ability to portray this phenomenon, which comes off as very real. The skillful photography from cinematographer Elliot Davis communicates the most complicated themes of the film: insecurity, confusion, wanting to be liked and accepted, and feeling like it's time to grow up fast. In an early scene, protagonist Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood), a shy girl and good student, approaches Evie (Nikki Reed), the school's ultra-popular bad girl, and the two size up each other's clothing, jewelry, hair, shoes, socks, and decide to go on a shopping spree. From there Tracy spirals downward, copying Evie's every move in an aggressive game of daring each other to take increasingly dangerous risks--stealing, getting piercings, experimenting with sex, drinking and taking drugs, and much more. All the while Tracy's mom (Holly Hunter) who is a bohemian ex-alcoholic trying to be open-minded and supportive about her daughter's rebellion, slowly loses her authority and her ability to cope with these volatile teens. A booming, excellent soundtrack punctuates the hyper, desperate, manic mood of the girls' behavior, and catalyzes the adrenaline rush that is THIRTEEN.

    Bad girls/sociopaths

A single mom who has been an alcoholic and has boyfriends lives with her 2 children. The father sends them an occasional cheque and is not too involved in the fate of his kids, which upsets them. The younger of the 2 is a 13 year old girl who longs to be cool. She manages to impress the cool/hot/manipulator girls at school. She learns to steal, to treat the uncool and adults with disrespect, to do drugs and to involve herself in casual sex. The reason for or the blame to be apportioned in such situations have been much discussed before. In this film, one could blame either or both parents, or a sociopathic child or her manipulative friend. This film rises to another level because it shows the angst and the inability of the mom to connect with her daughter after she's gone bad. It also ...

  • "Hit me. I'm serious; I can't feel anything, hit me!

I'm a parent of a young daughter and this has hit me pretty hard because it is associated in today's world. I understand this isn't exactly a true story but I do think that is could easily be based on a true story because I'm almost sure that something very close to this has happened at one point or another. The acting in this movie was some of the best I've seen from this cast. Although it isn't what happens to everyone it is what happens to an unfortunate fraction. There were a few points that just absolutely blew me away with the way they symbolized so much in one shot. I'm not taking any chances but I feel as though I need to place this anyway: ***************************Minor Spoiler Alert**************************** First: The shot where Evie and Tracy are in the park, Tracy gets ...

  • Teenage changrs

A powerful film about adolescences, the coming of age tale of a girl that just wants to fit it and have the approval of someone who is rated “cool” at school. It shows the challenges of peer pressure, body issues, sex, drugs, and the fears we’ve all felt on some level of not being good enough. Powerful film and great acting from both Evan Rachael Wood and Holly Hunter.

  • A great movie that shows what most try to hide

This has always been one of my favorite movies, only my cousin was the one that owned a copy, and she lives two states over. I would try to get my fix with the lifetime version, or the movie channels the occasional times it was playing but it just wasn't enough. This is one of those movies that anyone and everyone can relate to. Whether, it's you don't along with your parents or you do drugs, or you're somewhere in between, you can always relate to this movies. This is also really opens your eyes to the truth around you, not everything so peachy-keen and this movie definitely shows what most try to hide behind closed doors. Would I recommend this movie to anyone? And the answer is plain and simple: yes! To anyone and everyone willing to take an hour and a half or so to watch a ...

  • Honest

This movie is one of the very few out there that are about ACTUAL teen lives. Movies like Mean Girls, She's The Man, etc. are cute and fun for some but not realistic. A lot of people say that Evan Rachel Wood was over dramatic, and usually those people are adults. Either they have forgotten what it was like when they were teenagers, or they never went through it and dont believe that anyone else has. They are wrong. Teens cut, steal, are sexually active, and lie. Im not saying all do, but some. washington1960grad said it's about, "Little girls growing up way too fast. Sex, drinking, drugs, stealing, body piercing....there was no clear "moral of the story". Just despair." Well that's how it is for some teens! Teens WANT to grow up fast. They want to fit in. They want to experiment. And ...
