There are plenty of hardware samplers available from the heyday. Akai, Em-u, Kurzweil, Roland. Each has something to give, but none give quite the bang for the buck as the ASR-10. 16-bit 44.1khz sample rate, serious built-in effects, sequencer, transwaves, audio track recording, expansion, attached keyboard. It's a great tool for quickly going from sample source to beat to gold record sales (just ask many of the, to this day, known users of the ASR-10 in hip hop and electronic music in general). There's a sound and an immediacy to working with the ASR-10 keyboard version that is hard to match with any other sampler of the era. The effects and sequencer quickly open doors to ideas and sound that just aren't matched by the others. Cons: It does not have resonant filters, just multi-mode non-resonant ones It does not have an LCD that shows waveform data for editing Hardware support (parts & service) increasingly a challenge So much under the hood, it takes a while to learn where to go to make the magic and even once you know where you are going, many menus are layers deep.Read full review
