I've never met anyone else who has heard of this game in my life, and to this day it remains difficult to find good information on it online. It's quite sad really. This was a game I loved to rent as a kid. The game is loosely based on Sammo Hung's "Mr. Vampire" movie series. You play as a martial arts master going from town to town fighting Chinese zombies known as "kyonshi" (think Hsien Ko from Darkstalkers)in one-on-one duels. To do so, you navigate from house to house fighting the kyonshi, collecting items, buying new techniques at the dojo and collecting three orbs that allow you to fight the level boss who usually has special powers such as flying or throwing knives. The goal of the game is to get to town 8 and kill the evil witch who is behind the onslaught of the living dead. Your character only starts out with a punch and a kick, but by collecting scrolls you can upgrade them in each town to more powerful versions and unlock some abilities such as crouch walking, high jumps and faster movements. You can also find talismans that paralyze enemies, a sword that's rather useless and breaks easily, a Feng Shui reflector that knocks down enemies and a bell that allows you to control a small kyonshi to fight for you. The game is fairly open-ended and you may explore the houses in the villages in any order you want, although you should usually clear the temples first since they're the only place where you can heal and enemies do not respawn. Pressing A and B in front of a house informs you what's inside the area. If the message is "danger is in the air", you will find stronger foes inside and an orb. It's a fairly long and enjoyable game, with 8 levels and fairly open-ended gameplay. You do not have to collect items or learn new moves to progress, although they do make life a lot easier. The game also features a password system after every level so you can pick up where you left off. The controls are also quite solid and responsive, but a bit stiff, which might take some getting used to. Now for the negative. It is a fairly difficult game, and the enemy variety isn't that great; you only have a few different kyonshi to fight, except a few special enemies and the bosses. Naturally, all they do is jump forward and attack you with their claws. The game starts out playing slowly and takes some time to get going. Once you clear a few levels and learn more moves, the pace gets a lot better. Fighting enemies require very precise timing and may require a lot of practice. Thus this is a game that requires some time to fully enjoy. Kyonshi and their myths are also fairly unknown in the west too, so if you're not a fan of Chinese horror or martial arts movies, this game might not appeal to you. I'd highly recommend looking up videos online if you can find any and seeing how the game plays before you buy. If you don't like long and laborious action games (you do have to grind for scrolls if you want to purchase new moves), you won't like this game. It's a completely unique game and a lot of fun if you give it a chance. But since it's such an unusual game, it might not appeal to people who aren't fans of the genre, long action games or retro gamers. But if you loved Mr. Vampire or Chinese Ghost Story, or games like Altered Beast or Godzilla: Monster of Monsters, it might be worth your time to take a look. I personally enjoy this game a whole lot.Read full review
