Reviews"This is a great book that clearly presents the most relevant aspects related to Security and Safeguarding in the nuclear sector. It is a pleasure to read and truly informative. Essential reading for everybody involved in the nuclear sector or with an interest in nuclear power." By Giorgio Locatelli , PhD CEng FHE Chair in Project Business Strategy, University of Leeds "A wide-ranging authoritative specialist resource on nuclear safety, security and safeguards that strides across the boundaries of technology, policy and the law for both current and advanced nuclear systems." By Tony Roulstone , MA CEng Fi Mech E Inaugural Course Director Cambridge Masters in Nuclear Energy and former MD of Rolls-Royce Nuclear "This is an important book, at a critical time, on a vital subject. The international community is facing two existential threats - climate change and nuclear war. At the center of both of these challenges is civil nuclear energy. It is rising in importance as a zero-carbon energy source as the globe grapples with the inexorable rise of greenhouse gases. And it is a dual-use technology that can be diverted from peaceful uses to weapons purposes if there is a breach in the domestic and international controls. Advancing Security and Safeguarding in the Nuclear Power Industry offers expert and comprehensive descriptions and analysis of the key elements of the civil nuclear industry, how they can be managed to support the essential goals of achieving zero-carbon emissions while preventing nuclear proliferation and terrorism, and how the global community can and should prepare for future nuclear technology challenges. It is an essential read for those who understand that a key element of the future will be the nuclear-climate-global security nexus." By Kenneth N. Luongo President, Partnership for Global Security and Co-Chair of the Global Nexus Initiative, "Unlike many nuclear text books with 'Advanced' in its title, this book really is aimed at the specialist addressing a wide range of nuclear engineering and policy topics - being written by a diverse international group of distinguished academics, lawyers and scientists. It is a useful and up to date reference source for some of the less often discussed aspects of nuclear technology and policy. As such, the book requires a good knowledge of the basics of nuclear technology and of the industry to properly understand the different security and safeguarding topics, each of which are covered extensively in stand-alone chapters. Because of the breadth and the depth of topics, this book is something to be delved into for a specific purpose rather than read from cover to cover. With only a short preface, the first chapter - an introduction to advanced systems - does not follow the usual Generation IV route but provides an abstract way of looking at novel reactors and their means of power conversion. It starts with a second law of thermodynamics analysis before jumping into the principles of novel nuclear systems including: thermo-electric, thermal electron emissions, magneto-hydrodynamic systems and nuclear rockets. Nuclear systems are characterised by considering their materials for: fuel, control, cooling, and construction in order to classify current and future advanced reactor systems. In some sense, this approach is similar to work done at the outset of the industry in 1950s, but brought right up to date with current knowledge. There follows a wide-ranging but more conventional review of advanced reactor systems their potential use, their security, their safety and the related safeguards issues. The next three chapters address safety. First, the sources of radiation in the nuclear fuel cycle are described then the health effects are examined in depth before looking back in authoritative detail at the Fukushima accident and its effect on the industry and on safety regulation. This leads directly to a discussion of the off-site preparedness for nuclear accidents with an emphasis on the policy issues, both internationally and for individual countries. Finally, the legal frameworks for safety, security and safeguards and the civil liability and insurance issues are discussed. If there is a weakness, it is the omission of two things: the context of Climate Change and the economics of nuclear energy. Responding to Climate Change provides the impetus for nuclear to access new markets and to develop new types of system. Also, the future of nuclear will be determined as much by economics as by safety, security and safeguards. A discussion of economic would have been helpful." --University of Cambridge

SynopsisAdvanced Security and Safeguarding in the Nuclear Power Industry: Impacts of Radiation and Disaster Planning in the Modern World presents an overview of contemporary developments in nuclear energy post-Fukushima. Editor Victor Nian and his team of contributors guide those involved in the nuclear industry on how to re-educate society on the benefits of nuclear energy, working towards improving public perception. This book is particularly insightful to countries with an interest in developing a nuclear industry but who are not yet a nuclear-state, as well as countries where education to improve society's opinion on nuclear energy is crucial to its future success. Advanced Security and Safeguarding in the Nuclear Power Industry covers the foundations of nuclear power production as well as the benefits and impacts of radiation to human society, global conventions on safety, security and safeguarding, emergency preparedness and response, and relevant legal frameworks governing nuclear safety. Explores applications of nuclear energy beyond power production Examines the impacts of, and protection against, severe radiological disasters on society Discusses safety and security arrangements at international and national levels, Advanced Security and Safeguarding in the Nuclear Power Industry: State of the art and future challenges presents an overview of a wide ranging scientific, engineering, policy, regulatory, and legal issues facing the nuclear power industry. Editor Victor Nian and his team of contributors deliver a much needed review of the latest developments in safety, security and safeguards ("Three S's") as well as other related and important subject matters within and beyond the nuclear power industry. This book is particularly insightful to countries with an interest in developing a nuclear power industry as well as countries where education to improve society's opinion on nuclear energy is crucial to its future success. Advanced Security and Safeguarding in the Nuclear Power Industry covers the foundations of nuclear power production as well as the benefits and impacts of radiation to human society, international conventions, treaties, and standards on the "Three S's", emergency preparedness and response, and civil liability in the event of a nuclear accident.
