A good value, great versatility
If you are thinking about trying a 1X system but only have 9 speed, this is a good value when paired with an older XT, new Deore or even a Microshift SGS (long cage) rear derailleur. The 11/40 gives a decent but not completely optimized gear range for either mountain, touring or gravel use. It is a little heavy compared to a Shimano or SRAM cassette but is a well built quality product. My example is a older lightweight touring bike running 1X with a 38T narrow-wide chainring, this cassette, an M-772 Shimano SGS derailleur and a 10 speed chain. The chain needed several additional links for optimum chain length but otherwise works great. The 9 speed you can mix and match road and mountain derailleurs and shifters for great versatility.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

11-40 with 3x9 setup
I am running this 11-40 cassette as a 3x9 with 50-39-26 in front. Using an old 9 speed Shimano XT derailleur. I have chain length adequate to just barely cover big big 50+40 = 90 teeth. I can use all rear cogs with 39t chainring. This is on a recumbent with a long chain so there is no problem with cross-chaining ever. When using the 26 front I do not use smaller rear cogs and the 26-40 combo is lower than I use. 26-34 is plenty low for most climbing. Note 39-40 is around 1:1 thus 26-24 is about as low as I go with 26t chainring. I shifts acceptable at all ranges I have described. ..Great cassette, solid build. Tolerating lots of abuse and keeps on shifting wonderfully! Would definitely purchase again over those "add-on" 40-42T single kits that everyone seems to be selling - this is far more durable and much cheaper in the long run.
