  • If you're a great fan of Patrick Stewart you may like it ... otherwise skip it

Having watched the Richard Armitage version several times, I was curious when I heard about this earlier dramatization. While I liked that some parts of it were more "fleshed out" than the later version, other parts were glossed over or interpreted differently. Casting was also way off; while I have enjoyed Patrick Stewart's performance elsewhere, he just didn't cut it here as the powerful John Thornton. And I couldn't buy Rosaline Shanks as Margaret Hale: she seemed too old and jaded. With the two main characters not suited to the story there wasn't much to recommend this version. Worth a look if you're a fan of Patrick Stewart, but otherwise not much to recommend it. Stick with the 2004 version -- especially the romantic ending!

  • Good Classic British Film

It's a difficult film to find, so I was happy to get it for a great price here. I enjoy the story and appreciate how close it is to the novel.
