    Gielgud: our greatest speaker and our greatest listener

    Having seen the two knights in this play on Broadway years back, I was delighted to find it available on DVD. Gielgud was our greatest speaker of verse (especially Shakespeare), but it turns out he was also our greatest non-speaker: he withdrew into himself, staring motionlessly ahead, as the The legendary "Terry tears" coursed down his cheeks on cue (as they did eight times a week). The others' voicesbecame background noise, for us as for him, as we were drawn into his private world. Remarkable.
