About this product

Product Information

In considering the role of practical music in education this book explores the art of performance in Germany during the Baroque period. The author examines the large number of surviving treatises and instruction manuals used in the Lutheran schools during the period 1530-1800 and builds up a picture of the function and status of music in both school and church. This understanding of music as a functional art--musica practica--in turn gives us insight into contemporary performance of the sacred work of Praetorius, SchUtz, Buxtehude or Bach.

"This well-wriiten book frames the complex topic of Baroque performance practice in its broad, historical context....it is an important addition to the conductor's library." Choral Journal, 'Butt's organisation of his material is exemplary. He interprets contemporary comment helpfully, clarifying what is rudimentary and what is, or conceals, more sophisticated information.' The item had a faint scratch on it that wasn't visible in the photos or the description. Normally I wouldn't mind at all, but since it was a child's Christmas item, that did bother me, but overall it was still new as described and worth the price the seller charged. And of course the child didn't notice so I was still happy with the purchase. It also shipped very quickly, seller was pleasant, and the item was packaged professionally. I would buy from this seller again.
